The Nonsuch is a ship that is permanently housed in the Manitoba Museum. It is a replica of a trader ship that travelled between England and Canada in the 1600s, and the trip of the original encouraged investors to establish the Hudson's Bay Company. The replica that is housed in the Manitoba Museum was built to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Hudson's Bay Company, and it was built with hand tools from the 17th century.
The piece is an overture in 6/8 time, with a lyrical middle section. The opening is a bright fanfare that speaks to the optimism of the initial voyages of the boat. The middle lyrical section is the boat's journey, both over the water and through time, and the end has the boat coming to rest in the museum, to both look back and forward through time.
Perfect for concerts or festivals!
