Set in C minor, this swinging new blues chart by veteran composer and educator Terry White uses some of the most essential rhythmic figures as the building blocks of the tune. This makes it an exceptional choice for introducing swing style to a younger group, yet there is enough "meat on the bones" to make it an excellent concert selection as well.

This composition is a minor blues with a somewhat dark feel to it. At 132 bpm the approach should try to be as laid back as possible. The initial melody is in unison with the Tenor Saxes and Trombones. If this becomes too heavy, some parts could be left out to lighten the feel. The Trumpets and Alto Saxes pick up the second chorus of the unison melody leading into the open solo section at measure 41. The solo section provides an opportunity for multiple solos and the backgrounds can be optional or played where desired. Measure 53 has a full blown four measure "shout" section that leads into a Sax solo and then back to a full ensemble before returning to the melody in the Sax section. The arrangement concludes with a tag that builds to the end of the arrangement.

Thanks for programming But Here's The Thing and I hope you and your students enjoy the composition
