Based on the chord changes to There Will Never Be Another You, this swing chart has something for everyone! After the intro, the horns have some harmonized lines without the rhythm section. There are some dramatic dynamic changes that show the soft side of the band. There's a swingin' Sax solo and a section towards the end that hints at the original There Will Never Be Another You melody as the horns trade fours with the rhythm section.

The rhythm section is a powerful and dynamic element of Jazz, but one of my favorite things to do when running a big band rehearsal is to have the winds play without the rhythm section. It really makes the band aware that the time and feel of the music is not just the responsibility of the Bass and Drums but that all the players need to be able to maintain the groove even without the rhythm section laying it down for them. Sooner or Later builds this little rehearsal technique into the chart itself as the rhythm section drops out for part of each phrase in the opening section to allow the Saxes and Brass to carry the music on their own.

Note to the Director

You will probably find it helpful to have the Hi-hat play on 2 and 4 in the winds only section the first few times through the first 40 or so bars, but ideally, the Saxes and Brass should be able to maintain the time on their own. They do not need to play loud in these sections, but make sure they are listening to the lead players and the parts are well balanced. There should be some stark dynamic contrasts from 41 to the solo section. Have the Saxes dig into the solo sections at 49 and 65. The chart is based on the chord changes to There Will Never Be Another You and snippets of the melody from that tune are used at 105 and 121.
