Every year for two weeks in July, the city of Montreal is transformed into the worlds largest Jazz club. Montreal is a great city, and it becomes that much cooler during the Jazz Festival. Montreals love affair with jazz was the inspiration for Godins latest guitar, which isfittinglynamed, Montreal. The Montreal is the latest in a series of two-voiced guitars from Godin that marry the electric sound from traditional magnetic pickups with the acoustic sound from saddle transducers in the bridge. The two-chamber body of the Montreal is carved from a solid block of Mahogany and capped with a carved solid mahogany top adorned with two F-holes and cream binding. The 22-fret, 24 scale, neck is also fashioned from mahogany, and shaped for exceptional comfort by means of Godins ergocut technique. Hardware is black and gold including, two Godin humbuckers, a bridge loaded with L.R.Baggs transducer saddles, and an on-board preamp EQ. The two humbucking pickups produce an extensive range of sounds thanks to a special 5-way switch that provides five distinct tones on its own. Add in the bridge transducers and the palette of sounds becomes infinite. The two outputs are set up so that the electric and acoustic voices can be blended in the guitar using a single patch cord or at the amp/mixer using both outputs. Jazz and Blues players will love the way this guitar sounds and feels. The city of Montreal should also be pleased, as this guitar is as cool as its namesake.

Well, It's hard to knock this unit; as it pretty much impossible to find a similar product to compare it to. I have owned one for about seven years. Impeccable fretting and intonation within the neck. Electronics : 5 way sw./bucker or split coils /simple blend knob for A to E. and full stereo with separate knobs and sends yields like two guitars in one. Run the acoustic side to
the mains with a processor / add some ethereal effects or to an A/E amp and the buckers to great little tube amp and it can add a wrap around feel like you have another player on acoustic, chasing ever line you play. I own a few guitars and change a number of them out fairly regularly. All great units , but; I always end up comparing them to the Montreal as a bench mark for tone.
Godin is very under rated in general and some of the info on their own products could be? maybe more detailed / complete. The body is carved with a full center block leaving an upper and lower chambers for that ES mid freq. to lift a bit. The part of the deal that makes it for me, is the big solid brass block mounted into the mahogany center block. It's a rear loader with perfect ferrules and saddle setup. Very flat radius and everything matches and stays matched. It's been the easiest to tweak and keep set up for smooth playing; of any owned. Not to be missed; are the tuners. These should be on all guitars.
The are cap / top lock downs. YOU DON'T NEED to wrap the string around the post like a hitching post in the old west. Slip them through, lightly snug down, tune and you are done. Seven years and many string changes and never a problem. I can even remember
ever having a string break on this unit. Anyway, wrapping a string 3 to 7 times around a post is and have been the accepted norm but I think it was held over from the days of the Romans . Not overlapping and starting from the top and working down is a good way to get even purchase on the post. Godin proved they can do one better. With NO ! full wraps around the hitching post; works even better.
Comparative value at $1800 is very good. Look at 339's / 335's , high end Gretsch and
Duesenberg. Compare the sound, feel, build and then the price. It you have interest you may want to try one and decide. These low production units and issued almost a decade ago and with two sister models discontinued; this could be the next. It would be a shame, but Godin moves their production line and Luthiers along to new projects all the time. No rest for the talented. I will say I don't find it an overly attractive looking thing from any of the images. But, picking it up / playing it, the unit screams
hand made and carved art. Try one, if you can find one.

Godin did a fabulous job on this guitar! Beautiful...with brains...and class...you know that means its a keeper. I am constantly playing around with the multitude of tones available, so much fun. The neck is so easy and comfortable to play, build quality is impeccable.

I went to buy a ES335 but the piezo pickups caught my attention - I played it, loved it and bought it. It has replaced my other guitars including my acoustic on stage. I love this guitar - the neck, pups, sound, balance, knob placement and function. Why Godin puts this in a gig bag is weird though.
