Ash wood will only become rarer for fender as they’ve discontinued it (well, basically) and the lacquer with the wood grain makes every guitar a little unique to the next one. This is one of the best for Mexican Teles.
No problems with the electronics, although the reverse control panel may take a bit to get used to if you play a lot of Teles. Just means you’ll have to work on your volume swells. Neck has no frets sticking out, they spent some extra time making sure everything was very smooth and finished. Everything is very vintage looking except maybe the bright maple neck as opposed to roasted. The 3 bridge saddle is somewhat annoying but I don’t mind much, just doesn’t perfectly intonate although very close.
This will be a guitar I own for the rest of my life. Thanks Fender and L&M

This guitar has blown away my expectations of a midrange made in Mexico Fender guitar.
The finish is well done and it plays so well out of the box, I have yet to do its first set up.
The color combo and reversed switch panel is a nice touch and the hot pickups sound nice.
The C neck is great and really pulls some inspiration out of me.
It would have been nice to come with a case, but understandably it would drive up the price.
I have a few guitars and this is the cheapest guitar I own - and fast becoming one of my favorite go to’s.
Get one if you can.

First of all I love the look, sound and feel of this guitar. I am so glad they have this FSR option of the nice vintage look but also pair it with that 9.5" radius C shaped neck... the only reason I am not giving it 5 (and it's a lame reason I know) but the neck really should have that vintage tint like the USA made version of this guitar has... It'd be nice if the finish on the maple had that yellow hue that the body has. Other than that, the guitar itself plays like a dream and the quality coming out of Mexico these days is top-notch - barely any set up needed and no fretwork needed at all.
The brass saddles in the bridge are a nice touch though!

Wonderful guitar. A beautiful look. A wonderful sound. This Mexican Fender loses nothing to an American Fender. A wonderful Timbre, identical to an American Telecaster. I highly recommend this guitar. Worth buying, I recommend this guitar mainly to Telecaster lovers.

What a fantastic guitar!
I parted with a Telecaster a year ago and have regretted it every day since. Nothing beats a good Telecaster.
This guitar has a gorgeous hearty neck, bends like a champ yet stays in tune and has sustain for days even just picked acousticaly. I paired it with a Vox amp and it sounds clear and twangy like a tele should. The control plate is reversed so volume swells are a bit easier.
Fantastic price for a well made sturdy product and the service at Long and Mcquade was outstanding.

bought a floor model, was on sale, some pick rash & a small lacquer drip by string hole on back, plays fast. feels good, a bit heavy, lay out makes it easy to play, had a tele Mex with duel humbuckers prefer this one better, would recommend it to every body who likes to rock and (God forbid) play country

This thing is exactly what it says on the box. Plays great, simple controls, great tone. A few notes:
1) This has a reversed control plate, which places the volume directly below your hand. Depending on your touch, you may turn the guitar down when playing. The tension on the knob is quite low.
2) Intonation on this old-style bridge is annoying, but doable. I've seen replacement saddles claiming to make this easier and more consistent, but haven't tried any.
3) Mine came with noticeable fret sprout, but not enough to hinder playing. The frets can easily be felt on the neck edges. Mileage may vary.
4) I've tried this with a few different string gauges and found the pickups to be a little thin with light strings, but the guitar really howls with .11-.49s or larger.
5) If you have a high-gain tube amp, the tone from this guitar can be very, very exciting, but the pickups obviously buzz a lot when the amp is really saturated. I've just been riding the volume, but I might look into a pedal to quiet it a little bit.
6) The guitar's clean tone benefits a lot from a compressor, even one rolled almost all the way off. Get ready to ride the tone on the bridge pickup, because that thing can get very bright. And finally,
7) If you didn't already know, these guitars have no carves on the body, so this bad boy can be pretty heavy. I played two of them and one was extra chunky.

What can I say....my go to guitar now....my first Tele....and one incredible guitar. Love the Butterscotch Blonde look....plus the quality at an incredible price.
This is my first Tele....and maybe I don't know any better....but before I got this Tele, thinking it was with the 'normal' controls, I told my buddy (who found it for me used but in great condition....as good as brand new) that I intended to reverse the controls, which made perfect sense to me after seeing a YouTube video with Bill Kirchen.
I didn't have to do that after all as this Tele comes like this....and I cannot understand why they do not all come that way. My buddy has a FSR Deluxe Telecaster he uses for gigs....and loves his....and I have fallen in love with this one. And I really love the reverse switch plate, great for volume swells. Totally digging the reverse controls....channelling my Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan and definitely Bill Kirchen I guess. It looks great AND sounds great....especially through my Fender Junior Blues amp. I know some have talked in these reviews plus in various forums about changing the pickups and even the bridge....but I am more than happy with it just the way it is. Wouldn't change a thing.
"It's got a plush-lined case/it's all up in your face/it's your thunderin' lightning rod/it was born at the junction of form and function/it's the hammer of the honky-tonk gods." - Bill Kirchen

Had it for 3 months now, and I have to say it is one of the best guitars I have ever played. It sounds amazing both clean and with gain, and the neck is out of this world. It plays smooth as butter, and feels like an American made guitar. Unbeatable Tele for the value of it.

I have had this beauty for 6 months now and love it. This is my fifth guitar, 3rd electric.
I spent a month looking at Classic Vibe Squires and MiMs before this caught my eye and moreso my ear.
The only thing this doesn't have is an American serial number. It doesn't sound like a standard MiM or a CV.
1. Amazing pickups, hot and deep response - great low notes, perhaps even slightly uncharacteristic of what you'd expect
2. Great feel and playability right off the rack (neck is like all MiM I think) - silky smooth bending
3. Great butterscotch look, better than CV IMHO (no just because of the Fender logo)
4. Brass barrel bridge: not sure if this contributes significantly to the tone, but I think it does, and I like the vintage look
5. Ash body - non standard for a MiM (alder is) and I like that
Dials and switch are positioned in reverse to a normal Tele, it annoyed me at first, now I don't care. Having the Vol knob up front makes fading in/out more comfortable for me.
9-42 strings bend nicely but frequent retuning is needed until they're worked in and kept at steady temperature. Again, at first a little annoying, but it gets better with time and good care. I'm used to playing 10-46 but will keep 9's on this guitar
This guitar struck a good balance for me. It feels like I want a tele to feel, it sounds fantastic, looks great yet doesn't fetch the price of and American-made guitar.
- for that I think it's a good value

Always wanted the Butterscotch Blonde Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Keef Tele. Saw this in the Belleville Store (best customer service in the system), and it needed to come home with me. Travis at Belleville set me up with a Roland Cube set to clean to try it through and I found myself playing finger-style to jazz (Someone To Watch Over Me) little realizing that the warm, rich tone I was getting was from the bridge pickup. Bought it, took it home, changed the strings to d'Addario exl-110's, set it up, and haven't really put it down. The wood in the body and on the neck is gorgeous. The workmanship is spot on. I repair and restore old guitars, and I will be ordering the Gotoh compensated bridge saddles, but beyond that, I'm not changing a thing. Totally a desert island guitar, I'll take it to every gig that comes up from now on.

Always wanted the classic Butterscotch Blonde telecaster. Looked at the 52 reissue a while back but decided it was going to be a while before I could drop 2600.00 on one. Other purchases simply took priority over the desire to own that vintage tele. Ran into this FSR at L & M and was immediately sold on the look. That beautiful seminal masterpiece. I played it at the store with a marshall DSL 40c and with the stock speaker it sounded awesome. Bought it immediately. Got it home and with my DSL 40 with the cream back speaker, that works fantastic for all my other guitars, the neck pickup sounded really too dark for my taste. The stock 70/80 speaker in the DSL being more brittle compensated for that in the store. Long story short, I installed fender locking tuners, a tusq xl nut, a set of fender vintage noiseless telecaster pickups and a set of compensated brass saddles. Boom. For around 1200.00 I have a telecaster with every bit the look, tone and playability of the 52 reissue WITHOUT the single coil noise.. Because of the lower cost I have no qualms about eventually sanding some of the neck finish to satin it up a bit. Something I simply wouldn't even consider on a 2600.00 reissue. Extremely happy with this guitar. If you find one with the solid basics there's lots of worthwhile upgrades that can be done. Fantastic value.

I must have read 100+ reviews on this page and from the GC in the U.S. The positivity inspired me to order this one from the Vancouver store without trying it first. I was surprised at the minimal packaging, but that being said, it arrived via Canada Post in perfect condition.
I had reservations about the brass barrel saddles and their related intonation issues. But I learned the aftermarket compensated ones aren't that expensive so I'll go that route.
In the meantime, I've got it pretty close to right.
I'm sold on this guitar in a very big way. All the good things I read were true, and I look forward to making it well-used in short order.

No guitar comes out of the factory perfect. But the FSR I bought was close. That said, I had the frets levelled and a compensated bridge installed. Yeah, I know, close to $1000 and I had to tweak the details, but the few extra bucks were worth the money. I own an amazing guitar. The ash body is a nice twist on the traditional alder, and the reverse switch plate ads a little difference.

Got a good deal on a used one (but not a mark or blemish on it...in fact, side by side with a new one, I'd lay money on anyone being able to tell the new one from the used)...and I have to say, this is one super-nice tele! I love it. The tone. The color. The setup...all top-notch. I would highly recommend that anyone thinking of laying out a small fortune on an American Standard...give one of these babies a try first. Preferably at the same time...You won't be disappointed.

Value, value, value. This is an excellent example of the legendary Telecaster, and I don't see that the full-priced 'Made in USA' model is any better -- just a bit different. The fit and finish of the guitar is excellent. I appreciate the reversed controls (Why weren't they all made like this?). The ash body really highlights the highs! Indeed, it may be a bit too much for some tastes, but it's easier to back off the treble than to boost it. But what sealed the deal for me is that the pickups are reasonably quiet. I've had Fenders before (Strats and Teles, mostly USA models) and the noise from the single coils was irritating... the price I had to pay for the Fender sound. But this guitar is QUIET. I don't know if it's the pups, or perhaps superior shielding. Whatever, I am very happy. This is a keeper.

I intended to buy an American made Tele until I played this guitar. There was something immediately special about it...the weight, the feel, the sustain and so on. I would play an American then pick this up, play another American, then back to this one...it was the winner. Pick ups sound fantastic! I tend to play off the neck or neck bridge combined for clean jazz tones and I am very impressed. Reversed controls make volume swells a pinch. I set the guitar up myself as I prefer little or no relief and action as low as possible with 11-49s therefore it took a little tweaking to get it there. For those who don't know, L&M will do a set up usually included in the price (I just like to do my own).

New Tele . . .
2016 FSR (Fender Special Run) Deluxe Tele.
American components and parts, assembled in Mexico. Not Mexican mfg. No offence intended.
I suppose some folks would think me silly in the noggin, for choosing this Mexican assembled guitar over a USA made, but I really, really like this one. I had a 2008 American Std Tele that I traded in towards this one. I could never bond with it. It was mint, but I simply could not get it to "sit" right for me. It was also tooooo bright sounding. Ice picky, in your face, obnoxiously bright.
On the other hand, this MIM "Special Edition" is everything I love about a good Tele. The standard (vintage voice) hotter-output ceramic pickups give me plenty of warmth and meat while maintaining signature Tele clarity and bite. I prefer the vintage-styled brass barrels over the American Std (6) saddle setup. I prefer the reversed control plate. It's so convenient for volume and tone swells.
I luv, luv, luv the neck, fret board and frets. The action on this thing is perfect for me. No fretting out, no buzz, and slick as rain! The body weight is just right. I found the American std. too light . . .
The Fender sealed, die-cast tuning keys seem to be very nearly the same quality as USA Fenders' variety. The vintage-styled "ashtray" bridge is a little less refined than a more expensive USA-made Fender. Mine has a couple of rough edges. The pots and switch are standard, excellent Fender quality. Others have checked and report that they are CTS pots. I wouldn't be surprised if it were true because they "feel" like good quality controls.
Last, but not least, I adore the classic '52 butterscotch blonde w/ black guard look! The sunburst model I had was nice, but I much prefer this classic, ol-skool look.
These don't ship with a case or even a gig bag so I retained my (SKB) Fender case from the American Std. Long-McQuade gouged me pretty hard on the deal, but I live in a remote rural area so it's too difficult for me to sell a used guitar. Besides, I really, really like this one. I think it was made just after morning coffee break on a Wednesday. For a little under $900, I am super happy with it and I feel very blessed.

I recently purchased one of these and fell in love the moment I picked it up. I did only make one minor change from factory pickup in the bridge due to the heavier style of music I play but if you love the bright tones from your Tele, this is the guitar for you! I threw a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails bridge pick up in it to get the beefy, clear tones I need. Still has the beautiful clean tones too.
Would recommend for anyone playing all styles of music. Definitely worth the money.

Got this guitar a few weeks ago. With unlimited resources I would have bought something American made, but having played an American Standard not long prior, there's nothing I can point to on this guitar that is noticeably cheaper than the American made ones. I chose this over a standard MIM version for the pickups and the classic look. It plays really well and I enjoy the neck radius and shape.
I do have to say that the parts choices are a little interesting. It has the modern stamped tuners and yet uncompensated barrel saddle bridges. Some people may enjoy the true-to-vintage saddles; in that case, vintage tuners would complete the look. Myself, I'll be getting compensated barrel saddles to improve the intonation and probably some oval vintage locking tuners to both match the vintage look and improve function.
I took the 9s off and put 10s on. Made a nice improvement. I might put on flatwound 11s on next. This isn't a shredding guitar. Setup was good out of the box, tweaked the truss rod slightly and good to go.

I had owned a standard MIM tele about 5 years back. Although it was a great guitar for the money, there is something just much better about the FSR. I find a notieable improvment in the tone - much more alive than than standard MIM. It's probably a combination of the hot pups and ash body, but I absolutely love everything about it. I first played one roughly 6-8 months ago and have had only this guitar on my mind. I had a chance to buy a used American standard tele (swamp ash body rosewood frets) for the same price as a new FSR and I chose the FSR...fantastic guitar for the price

Further to my review of Oct/16/15, the output jack is the cheap one found in the low end guitars. Horrible jack to be honest. However, it took me only 5 minutes to replace it with a good Switchcraft 1/4" jack. Everything else is of good quality. The CTs pots, the 3 way switch, tuners, etc.
The more I play these standard pickups the more I enjoy the sound from this guitar. It is not brittle or too bright. It produces warm trebles and midrange, as well as a good punchy sound on the bass. The sound is very traditional Tele. It may be a combination of these PUs and the heavy ash body?!
The PUs have ceramic magnets, not alnico. But this does not impact quality. There are very expensive PUs in very expensive guitars using ceramic magnets. The quality of the sound from a PU does not come from the magnet. This is a fact.
In summary, so far so good. I love this guitar.

The MIM models such as this FSR or the Baja are top notch, with the same workmanship and high quality hardware as the American models. In this case, you pay way more for a MIA guitar because of the wages, benefits and overhead costs in the U.S. You are not getting twice or three times the quality when compared to the special editions made in Mexico. They are all of great quality, so why spending more? The cheap MIM guitars have limited quality, but these FSRs are one of the best Fenders I have ever played. Like the other reviewer, I also own US Fenders, and this Tele is one of my favorites. It sounds amazing and plays perfectly. It is well built and will last forever. I know professional musicians who play MIM guitars. They are wise with their money and know quality. Me too! I hope you'll find a good one like mine.

Well, I just got one and couldn't be happier. I've been looking for a butterscotch Tele for some time.
At the store, I compared this model to the similar American made which costs three times more. I had cash to get either one, but decided to do a comprehensive comparison before spending my money, which does not grow in trees. By the way, I already own numerous guitars made in the U.S. and Asia. All with excellent workmanship. I always look for quality, not brand names or origin of the plant.
The workmanship of both Teles was exactly the same. The neck and fingerboard were identical, so was the fretwork. Really, no difference here and this is critical to playability.
The PUs are different but both are good. I was surprised with the quality of the ceramics PU and the sound was pure Tele. The MIM Tele has a two piece body. The U.S. Model has three pieces. I could easily check that through the butterscotch finish. This is a heavy guitar, about 8 lbs, due to the swamp ash body. Very sturdy and provides brighter (not muddy) tones.
Hardware was typical in both models but I heard from previous reviews that the pots in this MIM Tele are also good quality CTS. I checked them when I got home and confirmed that the electronics are identical to the U.S. models (CTS pots). Remember, I also have US Teles and Strats. I didn't check the output jack though. Tuners are very good too.
In summary, I carefully checked and played both models. They are identically great, but one costs three times more because it is made in the U.S.
This was a no brainer to me. I can save the money for another guitar in the future. Yes, I have bad G.A.S. This MIM has the modern C neck (all my Fenders have modern C neck) which is perfect for me, as well as the 9.5" radius and mid jumbo frets. I am comfortable with either medium-jumbo or jumbo frets.
Finishing was flawless. This Special Edition Tele from Fender is a winner. No wonder the stores are selling them quickly (even in the US) and I was lucky to be there at the right time. I strongly recommend this guitar to any amateur or professional musician. You can also replace the PUs with whatever you want. What matters is the workmanship which affects playability and Fender did this one right. Kudos to their factory in Mexico!
