I bought this initially about 6 months ago to serve as a bare-bones controller for my Ableton Live DAW, following an exhaustive online research of MIDI controller reviews. It has certainly lived up to its billing and high praise, being the epitome of plug-and-play ease and versatility -- a simple USB hook-up to my laptop (no power required, as the USB takes care of that) and BAM, Ableton Live recognized it immediately without any need for lengthy configuration, etc. Knobs work just fine and integrate easily (since this device is apparently designed to work with Ableton to begin with?), but admittedly I haven't tried doing anything with the pads so can't comment on those. Since they're mini-keys, you are of course limited in what you can create from a purely single-track, polyphonic standpoint (i.e., elaborate two-handed piano riffs are tricky/impossible with only 25 keys, for obvious reasons), but it certainly does all you need and more when laying out multiple separate tracks. Key action is what you'd expect for a basic MIDI controller (i.e., no weight), but the keys *are* velocity sensitive, and again, it is clear that this is designed for portability and for creating track-by-track production work as opposed to live performace. I have to travel a lot, and the MK2 has become a permanent staple travel item, essentially allowing me to have a full-on portable music studio using nothing more than the MK2 and my laptop. I have admittedly since bought myself a 49-key full-size key MIDI controller (an Acorn Masterkey 49) for my home studio to handle "piano bits", but the MK2 is still an indispensable music production tool, particularly when I am on the road. MK2 comes packaged with Ableton Lite, which I had used previously when I first bought an audio interface, and Ableton Lite in itself ain't to shabby (especially given its price aka "free") for someone just starting out in the self-recording path. So yeah, nutshell summary: loads of value, features, a free "lite-version" DAW, and portability that cannot be understated, the Launchpad Mini is definitely worth it especially at the price. I know I love it, even if maybe my family and friends on the road don't (since I end up playing with it more than with them?)...
