With its classic Dobro lines, fully bound, highly figured maple wood body, and classic single cone resonator/spider bridge construction, the Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck is stunning in both appearance and tone. In addition to the bridges ebony saddle atop a maple base, the full, warm tone of the Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck is enhanced and projected by a new proprietary Dobro cone and amplified via a Fishman resonator pickup. Combining classic construction with state-of-the-art electronics, the Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck represents Gibson Originals deep respect for both the instruments history and the needs of todays players.

I own one. I've spent a lot of time and money trying to get it to sound great. Acoustically, it was okay until I found out that the spider didn't lie flat on the cone. Not a difficult fix, but how is it that a cast metal part is not level? Then there is the electronics. The Fishman pickup is tinny and howls with feedback at the slightest provocation. I put in an onboard mic to balance out the piezo pickup. It sounds okay, but a condenser mic on a stand sounds much better. But then I have to sit still during a performance (A difficult task for a fidgety Phil like me). Five of the tuners are good. One is sticky, so I traded it out. Not my typical experience with Epiphone. I own a 10 year old Korean SG and a 4 year old F5 mandolin, both of which are flawless and I can rely on during a performance or practice.

A good starter resophonic, with a mellow sound. Slide works well with this instrument; fingerstyle is restricted to about 5-8 frets from the nut as the string height is set to accommodate the slide. The Fishman pickup works OK, but really needs a pre-amp, or you will need to crank the gain to get much out of it. The pickup is probably not necessary if you are playing in smaller rooms (eg. household). Fit and finish is OK, but not really up to a standard I've seen on other Epiphone guitars. Overall, a good choice if you are starting to play a resophonic, but don't bother with the pickup!
