Aston Origin
The multi-award winning Aston Origin is a high-performance cardioid condenser microphone utilising a one inch (1") gold evaporated capsule. It's versatile enough to use with any instrument and, for singer-songwriters, excels on acoustic guitar and vocals. Its hand-selected capsule is paired with high-end transformerless circuitry using only the finest components.

The Origin is designed to deliver direct, smooth and intimate sound for a supremely natural and transparent recording.

Features
Wave-Form Spring Head - The shock resistant wave-form design allows the head of the mic to distort if given a heavy knock, and then return to its normal position, without any damage.
Built-In Pop Filter - Aston's vocal condenser microphones have an exclusive mesh-knit pop filter built into the wave-form head. The random weave allows sound to pass while drastically eliminating unwanted plosives at source.
Direct to Stand Mounting - Features custom moulded end caps with integrated XLR and universal stand thread adaptor.
PCB Circuitry - A superbly balanced mix of discrete and integrated electronic circuitry. Non-linear voltage/current source rectification to provide controlled amplification and smooth/ clear audio output.

I have been going to Texas at the yearly Austin Songwriter's Symposium for 6 years, I met many industry people there, we talk a lot of gear talk. I was introduced to the Aston microphones there. I took a chance and now own several models. The Spirit, the Element, the Stealth and the Origin. Even though the Origin is the simplest, not so fancy part of the family, it is my favorite. I plan on getting a second one, it is a great match for the Aston Spirit or the Shure SM57. I gave it a 5 for features because it does what it is to do without any weaknesses. I have become a big fan of Aston, note these mics pick up every nuances to what you record, it gets the source as it is delivered. One of the most important thing in recording is getting it right at the source, this mic does that. I recommend the Aston series of mics, especially the Origin.

They could be charging three times as much and it would still be the best mic in it's category!

I initially picked up one of the mics to try as a mono overhead mic on my drum kit to capture more of a "kit sound" as opposed to mainly cymbals. After a few weeks of tracking with it, I was hooked... so I picked up a second. In the few years I've had them now, I've used them as even used one as a voice over mic. I did a side by side blind comparison with a Neumann U89, and had a another producer friend of mine take both files and give me his thoughts... again not knowing which take came from which mic, ALL of his praise came to the Origin. He thought it must have been the U89 because he was so impressed with it... it was not. Smooth mids, great low end presence, and nothing too colourful in the top end. Just a really GREAT sounding mic, with a huge amount of versatility. Plus... they look cool. The only, very minor critique I can offer is, in order to get them to angle on a mic stand, you need to purchase an additional shock mount, which aren't cheap (Aston Swift - $80, or the Rycote - $100). I haven't purchased them to this point, and just use boom stands and angle the arms in the way I need them, which has been ok, but it would have been nice to include at least a basic or mount. Can't say enough great things about the Aston Origin - Get One.... NOW!

Just recorded a vocal cut through it at a professional studio, the engineer wouldn't tell me what it was when I asked him, he just said it sounded good. And I was thoroughly impressed, I had never heard of it prior to using it, and listening back to the takes everything sounded crisp and musical. I was actually surprised at how relatively inexpensive this mic is. Wouldn't hesitate to buy one after that experience.

Did comparison with equally and more expensive mics. For a deeper voice this is so much better than Shure. Had issue with low output but was just an anomaly as replacement was much better. A vocal frequency sweep shows even frequency levels. Clarity is perfect. Beware: it picks up everything (as a good mic should). Smacks of quality.

I own a pair of these and continue to be pleased with how well they work on so many sources. Recently i did a session with two of these wrapped up in Aston Halo reflection filters as my over heads on drums. The sound they captured was very detailed, with great mid range detail. Cymbals sounded very clear, transient detail is very nice. Crazy good performance from a mic this affordable.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
