Disappointed with the quality

I had read that Eastman guitars were hand crafted and that the quality of their build was superb. But, I also read negatives on the Korean made Kent Armstrong pups in the T386's. After seeing an A/B with a T386 upgraded with Porter Smooth/Classic pups vs a Gibson ES335, I really thought the upgraded Eastman held up impressively. So I purchased one with the intention of replacing the stock pups. While trying to remove the neck pup's retaining ring, one of the chrome retaining screws snapped off after less than half of a backwards turn. The others came off OK. Once the pup was removed, I was shocked by the rough work showing inside the cavity. There were three drilled holes on the side of the chamber opposite to where the wiring was routed (therefore served absolutely no purpose and may actually have negatively affected resonance, The walls of the cavity were very rough-hewn and the area of the centre block that was cut away for routing the pickup wiring looked like it was hacked away with a pocketknife. Splinters, shavings and sawdust abounded. For a hand crafted instrument, I felt this was appalling. My Squier Classic Vibe Custom Tele, at half the price of the T386, would have put it to shame in terms of workmanship. Needless to say, I returned it, got a refund and ordered me an Ibanez AS153.

I had been reading for months about the quality and value of the Eastman T386. I had the opportunity to play one at my local guitar center. I was very impressed with the look, feel and sound of the guitar. This particular one was sunburst and was just gorgeous. Then, I ran across another one at a pawn shop. Price used was half of the guitar center one. The one I purchased is bright red. I also own a Heritage H535 and have to say that the Eastman is on par with this fine guitar which cost a third of what I paid for the Heritage. The Eastman plays and sounds as good as the Heritage which has the renowned Seth Lover pickups. I have no plans to replace the Kent Armstrong pickups in my Eastman as many seem to be doing. If I were to pay $300+ to upgrade pickups and wiring, I could not brag about the deal I got buying this guitar used. And I am not convinced that the resulting replacement pickups would produce a discernible tone improvement. My Eastman was purchased used and I am very pleased. I did notice a few sharp fret edges up near the neck pickup/pick guard but other than that I love this guitar. I play it at church and given what it cost me, I do not worry about it as I would if I left my Heritage lying around between church services.

So here's my deal . . . Like so many guitarists, who aren't flush with cash, I've been keen to own a nice cherry red Gibson ES-335 since years, but just couldn't afford it. After whizzing around with a couple Epiphone copies and such, I felt sure that nothing could ever effectively scratch the itch - except the genuine article. Then I started hearing/reading/listening to all kinds of positive reviews about the hand crafted fare produced by Eastman guitars. After my experience with quite a few Epiphones and some other brands of Chinese-made guitars, I really didn't take the Eastman reviews too seriously - at first. Nevertheless, I figured that since the Eastmans are hand crafted by (supposedly) skilled luthiers, that just maybe, there could possibly be a well-made instrument out of China. Apparently, the Eastman workers are not forced to work for peasant wages, but are actually working with pride, enjoyment and honor. Surely all the reviewers couldn't be wrong. I mean, somebody would have come out and reported any subpar, cheap hide crap, wouldn't they? . . . But nope. Nada. Zilch! All reports were very positive. YouTube clips - looked and sounded great. Not quite 335-ish, but very good just the same. On December 2nd I made a three hour drive to the nearest Long-McQuade in my province of Nova Scotia. Lyndon Mac, the chap assisting me with my purchase, was so pleasant and accommodating. I had chatted with him via telephone the week before and he was good enough to put the guitar on hold for me. As soon as he took the guitar out to the front from the back storeroom, I was impressed. The case alone is beautiful. At first glance you perceive a generous helping of strength, quality and lushness. It's solid and well constructed. The case boasts a plush interior, a nice balance, and it is furnished with sturdy latches and a strong, comfortable handle. Now onto the best part - the guitar. Comparing a T386 side-by-side with an ES-335 I was duly impressed. Fit and finish are rich and luxurious. The Ivoloid binding is beautiful and well detailed. Ping vintage-style tuning keys are smooth and solid feeling. Tuning stability is nary a problem. Let's be sure to highlight the superb quality inherent in the genuine Gotoh "Tune-O-Matic" bridge and stop bar tailpiece. My new Eastman is gorgeous and easy on the ocular nerves - very rich and impressive-looking. The alluring grain of its maple laminate is readily enjoyed through the semi-transparent "classic violin" stain and nitrocellulose finish. This guitar is powered by a set of Kent Armstrong humbuckers. These are very respectable PAF-inspired pickups that yield vibrant, well-balanced classic humbucker tones with medium output. The neck position offers plenty of warm, resonant tonality whithout sacrificing a clear, defined top end. The Bridge selection is capable of delivering Classic 70s Rock growl and bluesy spark. I personally favor the center position which produces a wonderfully balanced blend of warmth, depth and articulate highs. Although the 1 & 3/4" nut width is a teensy bit broader than that of a typical ES-335, I find it very comfortable. The rosewood fretboard is lush and the fret work is fine. My particular guitar could do with some minor spot-levelling and fret dressing in a couple of spots, it is one of the best "out of the box" setups I've seen on a guitar in its class. Does this guitar replace a top-tier Gibson? Well, perhaps not, but what I can attest to is that it is a very fine quality instrument that greatly belies its moderate price point. Make no mistake - this is not some cheap, mass-produced assembly line clunker. Rather, it is a professional-grade alternative to the exorbitantly priced USA semi-hollow electrics.

Performance Warranty Banner
