The Meinl Mike Johnston cymbal box set contains a variety of Byzance models that Mike chooses for his standard set up when conducting lessons and performing.
Included in the box are 14 inch Byzance Extra Dry Medium Hi Hats, 20 inch Byzance Extra Thin Hammered Crash, 21 inch Byzance Mike Johnston Signature Transition Ride, plus a FREE 18 inch Byzance Extra Dry Thin Crash.
All Byzance cymbals are hand hammered into shape by Meinl cymbal artisans in Turkey using B20 bronze alloy. These cymbals deliver a musical blend of smooth and dry attack with a growling, earthy wash that is chock-full of character while creating a blend of tones that are suitable for just about any style of playing. The FREE 18 inch Byzance Extra Dry Thin Crash is great for adding a contrasting crash sound that works well as an accent cymbal with a quick sustain, and it allows players to dig in for trashy riding effects.

Just purchased these from L&M after deliberating for over a year for my project studio after they went on sale.
Superb and unique cymbals.
The hihats have an incredibly vintage and pronounced chick sound that really opens up nicely; they must be heard lived to be appreciated. The 18in Extra Dry crash has dry Asian sound that quickly dissipates which is a good bar-to-bar crash, while the 20in Extra Thin Dry crash has a lot more wallop and wash for when you need a big jazz crash.
The crown jewel is the Mike Johnson 21in ride, which is a very articulate ride with a ton of tonal zones (hitting close the bell provides a fairly normal ride like sound while hitting towards the edge gives you a massive wash and coming hard on it produces a light crash). The bell itself on the ride is quite unique too, and produces a more present sound of the ride rather then a standard bell tone. There are a ton of sounds hiding in this ride, but it really demands some stick and attack precision if you want to produce a consistent tone. The payoff is how excellent it sounds in an instrument mix.
Excellent for jazz, post, fusion, light rock... but probably not a good pick for metal or even heavier heavy rock.

These cymbals are in a league of their own.
Very unique but musical sounding. Played zildjian and sabian for the last 25 years and extremely happy I have discovered meinl just recently. I play primarly modern worship now in church and work perfectly. Even though you could rock out with these as well....very versatile.
