When its time to bliss out with an Electric Guitar, the last thing I want is to have to search through menus and program anything. I need an amp for Simple Minds! With the Katana - I read the manual on the way home - it took 6 minutes. I plugged in - turned everything to 12 O'clock position and BAM! Yes, then I had to turn the volume down :-) If you have to rock quietly - on 1/2 watt setting (so sad, I know), then crank the gain and volume to 3 O'clock position, and keep the master volume low. That gives you the overtones and harmonics you usually only hear at high volume. I love having switches that don't move, unless I move them! Rock on Boss! p.s. the Katana Mk1, 2x12 is selling for the same price as my Mk2, 1x12. I had to restrain myself! The lighter amp makes more sense for me. But $499 for a 2x12! Holy Alnicos!

Got the 100W Katana(first version) used after the raves from various people on Youtube calling it the best modelling amp ever. I have used tube amps large or small for 40 years( Plexis, Super, Deluxe and Twin Reverbs, Peavey 5150 and JCM 800s and for years now a DSL40 only) and I must say for what I thought was a cheap plastic pile of junk I think Boss scored a winner .I have used modellers before and I found Line 6 made all my guitars sound the same with a Pod,Vetta or HD147 head. I am not interested in the high end modelling like Helix,Kemper or Axe Fx because of the learning curve required and price. Does anyone really have a need for that many amps, cabinets and effects? If you water it down to various amp tonalities I find there is a half dozen at most. Beyond that its just variation.
The Katana tone responds very much like a tube amp with its pick attack and dynamics. It has a slight cold sharp thin edge which can be dialed out with proper EQ but you have to listen hard for it and its more apparent at extreme volumes. Modellers typically have something digital or fake going on but you have to know what to listen for next to a tube amp. Each of my guitars sound very individual which I wasn't expecting as well. The sound projects very well just like a tube amp.The built in attenuator works really good too without drastic tone changes from 100W down to .05W. I actually run it at 50W with the master at about 1 and it sounds the same as .05W at 4. 100W is plenty loud. After watching several Youtube vids its actually easy and quick to dial in a tone if you know what you are looking for. The foot controller gives access to both banks of four channels or you can use it to trigger the effects. It took a few hours but I have Ch1 set clean( no gain), Ch2 set slightly dirty( Hendrix, Trower, SRV) Ch3 set with moderate distortion ( AC/DC, G&R) and Ch4 with high gain (Metallica, Slipknot).
The only negatives are a cheap speaker, the cabinet vibrates a little too at higher volumes and' no built in tuner. I also got the 100W specifically for the effects loop and better foot controller otherwise I was happy with the 50W. I also don't use the Boss Tone Studio because surprisingly the amp nails everything 90% on the top panel.as I run pedals through its input and effects loop. The onboard effects are pretty minimal anyway unless you want to adjust them on the Boss Tone Studio and don't sound as good as my individual pedals. There are some effects missing(Whammy, Univibe, Fuzz) as it only has Boss effects only. I will probably try the Studio eventually just to see what its about as I have installed it on my laptop but at first look its not as daunting as a full scale high end modeller. I won't ditch all my pedals for practicality. I did that before. Never again. I don't like gear that seems to hint at being a jack of all trades giving one the sense to sell all their gear in favor of one piece of gear that seems to do everything. There is always a limitation or flaw somewhere that eventually gets to you. You either live with it or go back old school with a tube amp and pedals.
The Katana has set the bar high though although the Mark II gives access to more effects at once and offers variations of the original five models that aren't much different but that adds more bells and whistles that are really just icing on the cake.

I'm gonna go against the grain here. I bought this amp due to the numerous good reviews I've read online. I needed an SS amp as I injured my shoulder and couldn't keep on carrying my tube amp to gigs anymore.
I tried this and although I wasn't really impressed, still bought it with a GA-FC footswitch, thinking once I tinkered with it it'll probably be the amp everyone was raving about. I was wrong.
Ive had this amp for more than a month now and has gigged with it twice and I decided not to use this amp anymore for gigs.
At low volume, this amp sounds great. But once you crank this up at gig level it becomes overly bright, as in irritating bright. With the volume at 12 at 100 watts, the breakup is harsh. Whoever said this sounds like a tube amp need to have their ears checked. You can get close to sounding like a tube amp but this will never sound like a tube amp. If u want to sound like a tube amp, get a tube amp, no SS amp will sound like a tube amp.

I'm very picky when it comes to choice of amplifier. I desire a high quality and touch sensitive amp overdrive, and the volume to cut through a drummer who hits astronomically hard. Most people would go with a 30-50W tube amp to do that. I tried many tube amplifiers and loved their sounds, but they turned out to be expensive and heavy.
I eventually discovered this amp, which I had heard great things out of. I went to the store to test it, and the results were impressive. High quality and touch sensitive amp overdrive and the volume to cut through a hard-hitting drummer in a digital modelling amp? You've got to be kidding me! Who would of expected this? I would continue testing this and other tube amps, but in the end, I bought this amp. As soon as I got home, I connected it BOSS Tone Studio, which gave me more customization, and I was able to make it sound even better to my ears, even though it already sounded amazing. I plan on using this amp when I play at church next, since that should test it's capabilities and limits. This amp has got me set for the next 20 decades.

My ears are picky for guitar amps. I need to have a quality amp overdrive with excellent touch sensitivity, and volume that can compete with a hard-hitting drummer at the largest venues. In order to do that I would've needed to go with a 30-50W tube amp to do this. When I discovered this amp, I went to the store to go try it, and was immediately impressed. It had quality overdrive with excellent touch sensitivity, and volume that could compete with a hard-hitting drummer at the largest venues. It also has surprisingly amazing built-in effects. The BOSS Tone Studio gives me full access to the amp's settings, which allows me to have even more customization over my tone. This amp is just too easy to get a good tone out of.
The tilt stand is hard to pull out on the first time using it. I had to place a screwdriver under the leg and pull up. If you get it working once, it won't be too hard next time. If you want to project the sound better, you'll want to use the tilt stand.
This amp can go from sparkly cleans to warm bluesy overdrive to face-melting high-gain sounds. It's truly the ultimate amp.
I'd recommend this amp to both beginners and professional touring musicians. It can go from bedroom practice to packed stadiums.
Would I use this amp? Yes! It can excel in any situation you throw at it, from practicing at home to playing in a band.
If you ever get the chance, try this amp! I bet you'll enjoy it, even if you're the pickiest player in the world. Maybe you could even buy it.

I'm a gear junkie. I spend A LOT of time on-line looking at guitars, amps, pedals and anything to do with guitar. I'm addicted to guitar porn! And I've bought and sold enough gear to pay for a university education. Problem now is whenever I start looking and planning on a new amp, I play through my Katana 100 and I realize that this thing sounds as good as the amp I want to buy (and have already owned). This sucks!!! I mean....it's solid state! Come-on man! Like, what am I supposed to do now? Maybe I'll just get another one.

I just got into playing out after many years and needed a combo for the pub scene. I have played through a JCM900 for decades so I picked up a DSL20c. The hiss was unbelievable so I returned it and bought a YCV40. It was ok but needed a speaker upgrade. I lugged it around 6 months - it weighed around 55 pounds. I happened to try a Katana 100 at a pub jam and was impressed by the headroom and it took my ME80 really well (on 50 watt setting) I had seen a few bands use these and was impressed by the sound. But actually playing one and finding out the price sold me. Sold my YCV40 and never looked back. The built in effects eliminate the need for any pedals although it only stores 8 patches and the pedal is pricey but worth it. I never thought I would buy a solid state amp but this one is really really good.

Bought this amp a few days ago and had a chance over the weekend to play around with it. I had to gig with it the same day I bought the amp and had quite a few people tell me that the tone sounded amazing. I am so far very happy with the sounds this amp produces. I can play my mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and pedal steel guitar with very nice sounds.

After only a few hours I'm really starting to see the potential here. I bought this hoping to replace my main gig rig - an expensive and heavy tube amp + pedals. So far so good. The Tone Studio really opens up some exciting possibilities, but you can get some amazing tones just using the amp. For blues and rock there are so many great options here. And this thing is LOUD. Ridiculously loud. I never thought I'd go back to a solid state amp, but this amp has convinced me!

Last year I was debating which amp to get. Everyone always says that you can't beat tunes and they sound so much better. So I was leaning towards getting the fender bass breaker 15w, just before buying this amp came out and it was simple, sounded good and was practical for me. So I bit the bullet and bought it. I will never regret buying this amp because it is so good! I usually stay on the clean setting or the clean with the blues driver effect engaged on the amp and it sounds phenomenal. And when I do feel like playing higher gain stuff it can do just that at a great level. It's plenty loud, I played an outdoor gig with a drummer for 200+ people and had it on 50 watt mode just below 12 o?clock on the master knob and it was plenty loud.
If you are debating getting this amp just get it! You won't regret it.

Picked up a Katana 100 after getting back into jamming with some buddies regularly - this amp sounds fantastic at both bedroom volumes and jam volumes. In 50 watt mode, I only need the master turned up a smidge past half-way to get over my loud drummer - this definitely has enough volume for any situation.
The tones out of this thing are wonderful, and it's so easy to quickly dial in a good tone without much fiddling. 4 presets means you can come up with a couple of core tones to switch between easily. My only small concern is that the amp models on their own can't really get into super high gain territory - I found that diming the gain with the Brown or Lead models didn't really give me that super saturated modern metal tone... Might just be my guitars and pickups. However, with all the included effects it's easy enough to build a preset with a little boost in front to get something really saturated. That being said, anything lower gain than that sounds great.
Boss Tone Studio is fun to play with and opens up a ton of effects. The Katana is great on it's own without even touching BTS, but why wouldn't you want to play around with it? However, Boss' documentation for installing BTS is poor at best. Boss is REALLY terrible at writing (translating?) documentation. Compare to a company like Line 6... it's just a night and day difference. That being said, it's not rocket science to get it installed, you just need to be careful following instructions.
Pick up a GA-FC foot controller if you can - it is great and definitely recommended for any sort of live playing. Good luck getting your hands on one though - I ordered mine from L&M the day after buying the Katana and waited several months to get it. Roland is having supply issues and you'll see everyone on the internet is having a hard time finding a GA-FC.
In the end, the Katana is a great amp. It's not a boutique tube amp, nor is it a super high-end modelling system like an Axe FX or Helix. What it winds up being is a very easy to use modelling amp that reacts like a tube amp and lets you dial in very usable tones very quickly. Oh, and it's priced incredibly well too.

This amp has made me fall in love with playing the guitar again. It continues to impress me with the great, and varied, tones that I can get out of my HSS strat. But the best part is how simple the controls are - this is a piece of gear that you just turn on and start playing. For years I have spent time with computer modeled amp VSTs - and while they can be a lot of fun, I used to spend a lot of time fiddling and less time playing when using. The Katana is instant, and excellent tone. The sound is also excellent through headphones - which makes night practice much easier. I also love that I can select the Boss pedal models that I want to store in the unit to create my very own unique tone. I wish that Long and McQuade had more Katanas available on the show floor, as this amp deserves a LOT more attention than it currently is getting in store. I would have missed out on this gem if I hadn't done a ton of internet research. If you are looking at a modelling amp, you owe it to yourself to give this amplifier a try.

People complain about solid state amplification being not anywhere close to tube amplification, but things are sounding better lately! I own a superb 100-watt Marshall JCM900 in which I had the 5881 tubes quickly replaced with Svetlana EL34s, and it sings! But I got tired of lugging it (as well as a Boss DD-5 and one or two other pedals, plus adapters, 9V batteries, little cords and an extra power bar) around. Very heavy and bulky! I decided to get this little beast because it can muster up some great sound (with a little tweaking), and as much gain as you'd ever need, along with plenty of effects, etc. And, of course, it's much smaller and lighter than the all-tube Marshall. Perfect for live gigs especially. I'm not sure it could replace the Marshall for recording, but I may use it on occasional tracks (where I want plenty of gain), so as to avoid struggling with the Marshall and a DS-1, in which it's a constant struggle to eliminate noise and hiss, since my Strat can't always muster up as much gain as I sometimes need. I used to hate solid state amps, but Boss and Roland are developing some nice stuff, of late!

This is an update. I got the GA-FC footswitch and performed the updates with the Boss Tone Studio. The channel switching is good and the footswitch works well with the amp (a longer cord for the footswitch would have been nice). After a month, I have really enjoyed the amp. I use mostly on the 1/2 watt settings and it's been plenty loud with a small acoustic group I jam with. It is very easy to store tones and the amp gets the most time. A great option for weight and price from owning only tube amps.

This amp is great. I love the variety of output levels and the effects are good. The 4 channels are easy to set live and the acoustic setting works great. My G and L Legacy sounds amazing through it and so does my Epiphone Les Paul. I have ordered the GA-FC footswitch for channel switching. I currently have a Fender Princeton Reverb 68 Custom and a Mesa 5 :25 Express. I would recommend this amp .
