I couldn't get a decent head for my 12" remo apex djembe, and absolutely learned to hate the ping-y overtones of the skyndeep head.
I played a real djembe with a proper goatskin and fell in love with the tone.
However, I couldn't source out one for my little black drum.
On a whim, I thought I'd try a different tom head. I stumbled across this, and the difference was HUGE. With a bit of felt muffling on the underside, I was boppin away. Not perfect, but much much better.
Plus, the drum looks like a stout glass of Guinness
