G5222 Electromatic Amp - 5 Watts
This product is no longer available.
The Gretsch G5222 Electronmatic is a 5 watt single channel all tube guitar amp. It uses only two tubes and has a single volume knob and one input jack. It couldn't get any simplier and is great for recording or practice.

The volume knob acts more as a distortion control from about 10 o'clock and above. You can get a clean sound, gritty blues tone, and a distorted 'rock' tone. Using your guitar's volume control you can get a good range of tonal variations. Also use your guitar's tone control for more variation. The sound of the distortion reminds me of other small tube amps. You can get even more crank tone by adding a preamp stompbox like a "Blues Driver" or "Tube Screamer" Effects Pedal.

The 6V6 breaks up rather nicely with or without the extra gain. The G522 has two inputs (High, Low) It appears that the Low input is about -6dB or so lower in gain so if you are connecting a high output rackmount effect then you may want to try this one. Plugging into both inputs didn't seem to effect the sound other than make it a little less loud.

How loud is 5 watts? Watt for watt tubes are louder than solidstate. With five watts of tube power in to the 6 inch speaker is plenty loud for practice, and recording. The speaker is a "Special Design" 4 ohm driver with ceramic magnet. Not a lot of low end but there is an external 1/4 inch speaker jack inside the combo housing. Be careful not to burn your hands if you want to plug in a different speaker cabinet. The output is rated at 4 ohms so be sure what ever cabinet you use it's 4 ohms. If you want to get more low-end without using an externel speaker then try placing the amp in a corner of your room or place it at the front of a larger closed back box.

The tube complement is a 12AX7 preamp tube with a 6V6 power amp tube. This is same tubes used in the Fender tweed and blackfaced amps like the Champ and Princeton.

The look of the amp is pure vintage with it's tv cabinet, tweed covering, gold and brown speaker grille, and the red amp jewel (light). The amp is also very portable and only weighs 15 lbs. and is 11 inchs high, 12 inchs wide, and 7.5 inchs deep, and with its leather strap handle you can easily carry it around. Its better to let the tubes cool down before moving the amp.

I have owned for about six months or so. I researched the Champion 600 (same amplifier) and was looking for a low watt living room/recording all tube amp. This amp fits the bill. Nice tube tone and crunch even stock. I bought to modify. Weber 8" alnico, replaced tubes and grill cloth. Eventually will lift the r19 to bypass the tone stack resistor to really open up the amplifier's potential. So far I like it all. Played through a 12" cab, it sounds great. Nice old-school, volume-only amp that has some sweet sounds. Single coils seem to bring out the "Fender" in the amp. PAF's are good sounding as well. All good.

I like everyone else comments about this amp; it is pretty good for the price, sounds OK and looks good. Also looks like a ten inch speaker could fit in the housing pretty easy and that is what I am thinking of doing for mine. Just to give it a little more bottom end without going to an extension speaker. I have plugged it into an open back cabinet with a pair of Vintage 30 speakers and it's not bad at all. So a single ten inch speaker would still be lite enough to easily take with you but beef up the bottom end a bit.

First off, this amp looks absolutely beautiful in its tweed jacket. Despite negative comments about its shortcomings (generic tubes, ceramic-magnet speaker) this little amp produces a warm, sweet tone and just the right breakup when you max the volume. Add a reverb pedal and this is one stunning amp for home use or travelling to jams. The extra instrument input is also a big plus for jam sessions.

The photo on this web page doesn't do justice to this amp: it is a beautiful yellow tweed that catches every eye! It is the perfect size and weight for a portable jamming amp, and the two inputs are a big plus if you have friends who are amp-challeged. The sound is exactly what I wanted: warm and round with a subtle transition to that lovely tube breakup near max volume. Very pleased with this new purchase; as another reviewer said: it's a keeper.

This amp was recommended to me at the Mississauga store when I was picking out my first Electric guitar. It's small, easy to use, with few bells and whistles. The volume packs a punch for its size, and without the built-in software it works well with effects pedals.

This is a very cool amp for practicing or recording. Build quality seems very high. Tone keeps you honest (no modelling stuff to hide behind). Lovely vintage tones with my Gibson P90-equipped SG & Fender Jazzmaster. I changed the tubes after 6 months to a Preferred Series 7025 & JJ 6V6S and the amp sounds even better than with the OEM tubes. Overall, I love this amp -- it's a keeper!

Same amplifiers. Champion 600 was $160 and the Gretsch is $195? Still a pretty good price for a Class A tube amp.

I wanted simple, compact, with great warm valve tone. I got it. Couldn't be simpler, and it delivers. Wonderful slightly driven blues tone which just gets better with volume, matches my Gretsch hollow body perfectly. Can't recommend it enough, it's that good. And looks outrageously vintage too.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
