The Traynor Custom Valve 20WR answers the need for guitar players looking for superior sounding all-tube tone in a smaller, yet still feature loaded, lower-powered amplifier.

The Traynor Custom Valve 20WR is perfect for the studio or for any gig where 15 tube watts is more than enough power, but full functionality is required. Unlike competitive amplifiers in this class, the YCV20WR offers the discriminating player two discrete footswitchable channels with true independent gain and volume controls on each channel. A master three band EQ, effects loop, as well as an internal spring reverb are all standard equipment. Additional controls include bright switch on the clean channel and boost switch on the lead channel.

The YCV20WR is a "Class A" power amplifier driven by three 12AX7A's and two EL84's and features a Celestion "Greenback" G12M 12 speaker for classic tone.

This one has to be heard to be believed and it's entirely built in Canada. It also features multi-ply birch cabinetry so it's tough as a little tank.

Features:
• Class "A" Cathode bias amplifier
• DC filaments on preamp tubes eliminate hum
• Fully regulated power supply with tube rectifier emulation
• Long Accutronics spring reverb
• Classic Celestion G12M "Greenback" speaker

I have a old 3rd owner Kijiji Special Roland solid state amp that I do enjoy. However, it was time for an upgrade to a small tube amp. I tried all of the ‘usual’ suspects available, you know who they are. I was looking for something a little different and was directed to this amp. WOW…JUST WOW!! What a great little tone monster! With a little roll of this and a turn of that, I can get pretty much any tone/sound that I wish. Its a no frills, understated, solidly made in Canada no less, great great amp. I couldn’t be happier with my choice. A big thank you to the L&M Danforth Staff for their insight and guidance. Give them all a raise, a beer and a pizza I say. The staff, all of them, at the Danforth Shop are totally Top Shelf employees. Moreover, a BIG BIG SHOUT OUT TO FENDER MONTH & your financing policies. 😁 Thanks for everything guys. Cheers Now, its time to ‘rock out’!

This amp is an easy to use tone machine! From dirty rock to sweet thick jazz. Plenty loud enough for small to medium gigs, quiet enough for comfortable practice. I love it!

Good little amp for recording or small gigs. Reverb is very lush. Each channel sounds good, BUT it should be noted that these amps use relay-based switching so if the gain levels are dramatically different between the two channels (as most would prefer to switch from clean to dirty), the amp will duck the signal when switching from one to the other and there will be a very noticable audio drop-out. I realize this is to hide the audible switch pop, but the lag when switching channels is so extreme that the next note you play after switching channels will be muted. For this reason I would only suggest this amp for recording clean and dirty tracks separately, or for small gigs as long as you stick to one channel. Seeing this as a 2-channel amp that you can switch on the fly will sadly leave you disappointed. Tubes are fairly easy to access to change. Cab in well-built (and heavier than it looks), but the standby button cracked in half after the first week of use. Having an effects loop, headphone out, speaker defeat, and Accutronics long spring reverb is nice, but the shoddy electronics really hold this amp back. With a $900 price tag, you'd think it wouldn't have these issues.

I love my ycv20wr. It’s made of plywood instead of particle board like many other amps in its price range. Canadian made is a plus as well. Initially I was afraid it wouldn’t be loud enough to compete with an acoustic drum set, but I was wrong. For 15 watts this amp gets very loud. I ended up selling my coveted boutique overdrive pedal because the overdrive from this amp sounded so much better. Both channels on this amp sound great. Can’t say enough good things about it. Only complaint I could think of has already been stated in another review, the reverb is quite strong; imo when it’s set to 5 it sounds like it’s at 10.

I wanted to purchase a tube amp and insist on lasting quality, versatility. I preferred an amp that was made in North America and not off shore or Mexico. "Made in Canada" would be a bonus. I researched all the contenders and rented a Vox, 3 Fenders, and the Traynor YCV 20. Then I researched more and contacted the manufactures and ask some questions. I also researched Blackstar amps and included them in the contact process. I have to say that the service level of the fellow at Traynor was exceptional. My email was sent on a Friday, a long weekend, and I had a response that Sunday. This was definitely not the case with the rest. Now I do have to say the Blackstar rep took a week to get back to me but once we started the communication back and forth they were qexcellent. I have only had the Traynor YCV 20WR home for a week and I am extremely happy with my decision. The quality, attention to detail and sound of this unit make me think that there is no competition in this field, in my opinion. Traynor should be rewarded with strong sales of their amps based on quality, local design and commitment to great service. They back their produce with the best warranty in the business. If you are in the market for a high quality amp you want to keep forever this is it, you will have no regrets.

I currently have this as a loaner/rental while my own combo (Marshall) is in the shop. Pros - simple set of knobs, so it can be dialed in quickly. The Greenback is a great sounding speaker. I'm using very little gain, green channel, treble 10:00, bass and mid up full. Master pretty much full open in a non mic'd pub. Maybe half in my basement. I'm playing blues, country, lighter rock on an EC Strat or an LPC. Cons - the knobs tend to spin a bit when I carry it around so a minor inconvenience to reset them. If they cannot fix the issues with my own combo, I will seriously consider trading for this. Why keep searching when I already know this will do the job? Yes it's a Traynor and I recommend you try one for yourself.

I bought this amp at L & M in Vancouver back in 2004 and it's has performed flawlessly since. Paid $670.00 back then. Replaced the original tubes with JJs after the first year which really improved an already great tone. Very 'touch sensitive'.After playing through various Fender and Mesa amps two to three times the price, first thing I found was with this little Traynor all my guitars sounded more distinct... Single coil Strats, Les Paul, Ibanez super Strats, semi hollow body's. The only amp I use except for my YCV40WR when I need more volume! Still going strong after 14 years with absolutely no problems!

I have had this amp for a little more than a year and I'm still loving it. Replaced the stock Ruby 6BQ5 output tubes with NOS (1975) Russian military equivalents (6P14P-EV). Noticeably larger and fuller sound (not just louder). Next up, replace the stock V2 with a NOS Mullard and V3 with a NOS RCA 5751. Stay tuned.

I was looking for an amp that suited the music I play with friends. I wanted an amp that gave me the best clean sound and a good dirty sound. I research 4 and tested 3 amps and was testing the 4th and it failed to impress me and the L&M guy suggested this. I plugged in and made up my mind in the first minute that I had found my amp. Jazz clean to Stones fuzz to Zeppelin OD to AC/DC crunch just on the clean channel. An AC15 has better clean and a Blue's Jr has great over driven tone and the Marshall had better crunch but this has it all. I have spent hours at home getting to know this amp and I can't get enough. The only things bad are the Spring Reverb is really touchy so if I use it at all it goes to .5 to 1.5 and the amp and I have to rethink my pedal board.

I've had this amp for a few months now and I have to say that it has exceeded my hopes and expectations (I bought it online based on sound clips and reviews without actually being able to try it). Amps are tools, though, that we use in the chain to express our music. If you want a professional result, you have to use the right tool for the job at hand. I play light, chord-melody style jazz, sometimes with fingers sometimes with pick, but always with light string attack. Volume, crunch, breakup, etc. are not of interest to me. TONE IS KING and this amp delivers beautifully. Whether I'm using the neck pickup on my Tele clone to try to emulate Ted Greene's sound or my semi-hollow archtop with a more rolled off "typical" jazz guitar sound, the amp is right there with me. I've noticed that it's very responsive to small pickup adjustments, both in terms of string clearance and individual pole pieces. As they say, if this amp was lost or stolen I would replace it immediately without even looking at the competition. I gave it a 4 on Features because I wish that it had a Pure Mode switch that bypasses the tone stack entirely, like the YGL-1. So, right out of the box it's a beautiful sounding little amp. Add in some tube swapping, perhaps a different speaker, and tone heaven awaits.

Closest Store   Oshawa, Ontario
I bought this amp at L&M Oshawa. I was looking for a small "grab and go" type of tube amp for jams and small gigs. After trying out some of the other amps in the 15 watt category, the YCV 20 was the obvious choice. Lush and full cleans that have a nice punch and chime to them and because of the gain control on the clean channel, I can dial in as much "break-up" as I want. The gain channel sounds crisp and punchy with a surprising amount of dirt on tap. With the gain at about 6.5 your into the ACDC crunch zone. Kick the boost on and there's enough dirt for hard rock. I've read that a tube change will greatly improve the tone of this amp, but I find the stock tubes to be fine. Took it to it's first jam the other night, a rock/classic rock 3 piece with a heavy handed drummer and a bass player with a 6 foot tall stack. My clean channel rode on 7 the whole night and cut through the mix loud and clear and the gain channel didn't quite make it to 6 and I had no problems hanging with the band. For 15 watts it's an extremely loud little tone beast!! If your looking for a bedroom amp this one might not be for you (although it does have a speaker defeat and headphones out), but if you want a beautiful sounding and powerful grab and go amp, this is the one you want. it's also a great looking amp and feels very sturdy. It has a 2 year "even if you break it" warranty that I don't think I'll be needing as Traynor amps are known to be built like a tank. Do yourself a favor and try this one out before you decide to go with something based on the name on the front of it. You'll be glad you did.

Had a couple of these over the years. Compact, great sounding, awesome feature set, very quiet. Heavy tho for a little amp but built to last like a all Traynors. Rich sounding, reverb is nice. Everyone's tastes is different but I found it a little mushy sounding. Great at home but in a live setting (mic thru PA) just didn't cut. Overdrive was a little indistinct but used the clean channel most of the time anyways.

Just purchased this amp (second hand at L&M but in pristine condition) and I absolutely love it. The Celestion Greenback gives it the most amazing full tone. The controls are really simple but so so functional. The clean is wonderful, grits up nicely with more volume; the dirty channel is as dirty as you want and the Celestion delivers the full body to go with it. First amp I've ever had that makes ALL my guitars sound amazing! Last amp I'll ever own!

After buying this amp, and swapping out the tubes, replaced with JJ 100% there is a remarkable difference in the sound. Negative: Doing a tube change over takes about three hours, you got to move the speaker, plus I did not reinstall the cover plate where the 2-AX7 tubes are to let the heat escape. "You need a short stubby screwdriver" to work on this amp, plus you got to pull out the top of the head just to put in some new tubes. I sold the YGL1 to buy this amp because I wanted one amp to plug all my guitars in, and the YCV 20 makes the grade, A Fender Tele, Gretsch, Godin Classical, all sound great through this amp Traynor should stay away from Sovtech Tubes, go JJ or Tungsol, I have.

Have owned this for about 2 years now. No complaints other than the tubes. Like another reviewer said, up grade them with better quality and this amp does what you will need. Clean is great and you can overdrive the power amp for some cool grit n crunch. The lead channel can be driven hard while the 3 band eq helps to mold your tone. Good reverb included as well that can go quite deep. I have mine hooked up to the matching 1x12 cabinet which adds some bottom end. Great value again from Traynor!

I bought this amp at the L&M in Richmond, in the first week it made some strange sounds almost like delicate glass breaking; I should have returned it! Two months in it has done that twice more, but both times it was sporadic and returned to normal function. Yesterday it quit working. The power light is on, fuse is good, tubes are all lit, but no sound, and no the standby switch is not on. I am extremely dissatisfied that a new Canadian made product is so poorly built. Like I mentioned, I should have returned it the first time it made the noises.

I've had this great little amp for just over a year and have really got to know it. The clean channel is exceptionally good. Warm or bright tones just pour out of this thing! The clean channel gain gives a wonderful break up that is easily controlled. The gain channel is the only thing on this amp that has given me problems. The sovtek tube that it comes with give that channel a thin, "cardboardy" crunch that is not very appealing. However upgrading the tubes brings this little rock machine to life and then some! Just factor in another $60-$80 for new tubes and you absolutely will not regret this purchase!!

Great lil amp. Lots of tone possibilities with channel switching and reverb and an effect loop as well. Good bass and trebel response, the three band eq is nice! I have it A/B with an Orange Tiny Terror, and I feel is is more versatile than the Tiny Terror, but depends on what your style/taste is. Was considering the YCV 40 WR, but felt that 15 watts is good for what I need, however the 40 WR looks great also. Traynor is all quality Canada build greatness!!

This little gem is not only a great amp on it's own, it is also great to use if you run multiple rigs. I use this with a Marshall TSL 602 along with a 'Dark Horse' 1X12 cab(plugged into the 15 watt Traynor). These two are a very good combination for a very lushcious deep rich tone. However, I upgraded my Traynor 'Custom Valve 20' with a Celestion 'Alnico Blue' and the the 'Dark Horse' 1x12 extension cab with a Celestion 'Heritage' G12 H30 55rhz. To die for tone, and easy to carry arond too.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
