The compact, lightweight MicroPipes works with standard stereo headphones, and does not contain a built-in speaker.
Power is automatically turned on when the unit is picked up and any note is played. After approximately 3 minutes of non-use (hi A or no fingers on the chanter), the unit powers itself down to conserve battery life.
