The traditional bass style of the 4003S - with dot inlays and no binding - was prized by Paul McCartney and Chris Squire when they got their first 4001S models in 1964. Players cherish its traditional look and rounded edges that many claim make it more comfortable than the 4003. The updated 4003S version comes with the improved dual trussrod system. Of course, the famous solid bass tones, ringing sustain and treble punch make it a dream. Iconic curves of maple form the body with a traditional Rosewood fingerboard. Dot inlays and no binding make this stand out from the standard 4003.

I was on the fence for many years to buy a Rickenbacker. The problem is they are never stock being produced in limited quantities couple times a year only. Difficult to test drive prior to buy. Rickenbacker are known for their specific growly tone but also for their numerous quirks. In the last years many of those quirks have been addressed. The new Schaller V2 Bridge with rolling saddles and intonation screws make adjustment a bliss. The now single trussrod makes relief easier to adjust. They brought back the gorgeous walnut skunk stripe. I specifically ordered myself the 4003SW because I wanted the ergonomic body contour. The slimmer satin finished maple neck is fast and feels great. I ordered mine last week of March expecting to wait a full year but I got a call from my sales rep the following week a 2024 batch had just been in. Mine weights 8.4 pounds which for a Ric is not too heavy, it is also very balanced, no neck dive. Quality Assurance is also at the top of their game CNC machines also help. The only quirk remaining is the useless plastic bridge cover that gets in the way exactly at the sweet spot in my opinion. It serves no other purpose than for retaining nostalgia look of the former horseshoe pickup; I dealt with by ordering a treble cove bezel from TubeAmpology. Now it is a perfect instrument in my book, looks gorgeous

It says on the L&M website that you can expect to wait up to 365 days to receive one of these basses. I waited 377 days. So close. Now that I've had it for a while, let me tell you what i don't like, then I'll tell you what I do like. The case is very flimsy to house such an expensive instrument. If you don't close it "just so" it will not latch at all. I'd have expected a better case than the Flight Case my 2011 Fender bass came with, but that's not the case. Pun intended. The plastic control knobs feel very cheap. Turn them in either direction and you can feel them turning crooked on the posts. They do not click into place and feel very flimsy. I might be able to fix this issue, but I run them full on so I don't think about it a lot. Now, what do I like about this bass? Everything else. It looks good, it sounds amazing and it's super smooth and easy to play. The fit and finish of everything except the aforementioned control knobs is superb. It's a very solid instrument. It's the first bass I've ever owned that will cut through two guitars, keyboards, drums and vocals with just a little extra push with your fingers or pick. That in itself has made me a better player , even after 45 years, because you can't hide your mistakes. I love this bass. It even has the new Rickenbacker bridge on it that lets you set it up with infinite adjustments to your liking. The older bridges only allowed a raising and lowering of the strings. In conclusion, If you can overlook a few of the minor things I pointed out, I highly recommend you at least try one. I think you'll be as impressed as I am.

Rickenbackers have a unique tone, which is what make them legendary and indeed a fantastic bass. However, that is also a major limitation. Rick's are not versatile. If you play in a cover band that plays several genres and styles, this may not be the bass for you. Also, THE Rick tone tends to medium range, and may end up conflicting with the guitars in you band.

The Rickenbacker 4003 is the Citroën DS of the bass world. They're stunningly beautiful and completely different from everything else out there. The Walnut 4003S is the best-playing version. Pros: - Solves the uncomfortable ergonomics from the 4003's body binding. - Much lighter than a maple-bodied Rickenbacker. - Satin neck feels incredible, is very, very fast. - Amazing fretboard access, and very tweakable neck via dual truss rod system. - Incredible tone. Cons: - The bridge pickup cover is an annoyance. Fortunately, there are lots of options for filling or replacing the bridge's pickup surround. - No obvious place to put your thumb. Fortunately, there are lots of reversible options out there. Oddities: - Rickenbackers don't have soft frets. They do, however have a bit of gold in the metallurgy to prevent them from tarnishing over time. - Truss rods are user replaceable on Rickenbackers: with practice, you can swap a set out in about 20 minutes. - The body is THIN.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
