Just bought this uke after trading in a Kala Concert. I much prefer the larger fretboard spacing. The Concert size was just a little too tight for my older & slightly stiff senior fingers, even though my ✋ are small. Also, this Kala Tenor has a satin finish, which I much prefer over a sticky gloss finish which always ends up showing unattractive fingerprints. The Kala company is well respected. The uke is well made. It's attractive. And, it comes with a strap button. The price point is reasonable. The staff at Long and McQuaid are helpful & pleasant to deal with. Exchanges & trade-ins are never a hassle. Plus, their stores are everywhere across the country. If one store doesn't have what you want, they can probably get it quickly from another location. They'll even give you ukulele lessons. So, what's not to like? Waiting on some thin Low G Aquila Reds to come in, to replace the factory installed thicker High G Aquila Super Nylgut strings. This is my 5th uke in under 3 years that I've purchased from Long and McQuaid. Wish I had just purchased a Kala Tenor the 1st time around. If you're buying your 1st uke, I highly recommend that you also buy a strap & music stand at the same time, besides the obvious need for a tuner & case, of course. 😀

I suppose you get what you pay for. An instrument lottery. I had high hopes for this little Uke based on other reviews. But I'm afraid I can't give this product a favorable review. The construction quality is poor. It is made in China of course. The neck seems to be separating from the body of the Uke ever so slightly. I thought maybe it was a small gap filled with glue but no, I can squeeze the back and body towards each other and it opens and closes. It's not a problem today but over time it will be. Maybe I can fill it in with a syringe of some epoxy, but it's troubling none the less when you throw a couple hundred bucks at something you expect it to have at least the durability of a child's toy. Which this Ukelele seemingly doesn't. On top of that I can't also say it has great tone. At least, it doesn't project noise very well. It is relatively cheap, it feels cheap and it sounds cheap. If you want to mess around with a ukelele but aren't sure I recommend spending either way less, in the under $100 area, because you'll likely see similar quality, or way more, because you will get something of finer craftsmanship. Not that I'd call this craftsmanship at all. Sorry. I can't recommend.

Bought mine over a year ago and it’s still fantastic. Stays in tune even after a few weeks of not playing (I have other ukes I also play) and has solid construction which is what one would expect of a Kala. I even put a low G on it and it sounds amazing!

I listened to all the ukulele's in the store and I found the Kala Tenor was for me. It's appearance, size and tone was by far my top choice. I am now enjoying the beginnings of my adventure with playing the Kala Tenor Ukulele.

After building a small soprano from a kit, I longed for something better and wifey let me choose this as my birthday present. The strings are settling in a lot faster than the soprano ever did. The tone is very very nice. It is a light instrument (ok relative to a few other smallish instruments I own). Good quality closed gear tuners, nut slot action is just right. Nice thin veneer on the headstock to cover the scarf joint. The finish on the wood leaves it looking very natural, not plasticy, and the binding adds a nice flare to the instrument. Bought a Levy’s gig bag to go with this and it fits nicely.

The ukulele looks and plays nice, however, there are some workmanship issues regarding the string bridge. We returned one because there was a gap in the string bridge that was getting worse over time. When we brought it in to get it replaced, we realized that tiny gaps were visible in several of the other Kala tenors that were shown to us. We did find one where the bridge was glued down properly. So, if you buy this model, be sure to inspect the back of the string bridge. Tom at the Vancouver location was super helpful and accommodating. We will definitely buy from there again.

This is my first Uke and I'm glad I went with this Kala tenor. After the first couple of days of playing it, the strings have settled in and it holds its tuning quite well. Has a very nice tone and the instrument is well balanced weight wise.

This ukulele is definitely worth $130- has such beautiful, rich tones, and it's so comfortable to play. Even as a beginner instrument, I think this would be an excellent choice.

Although this Kala might be considered more 'entry level' by some, this is a beautiful, solidly made uke with gorgeous, rich tones. I'm still a beginner myself and had to get this tenor in addition to my little soprano cheap-but-goodie starter uke. WOW. Of course the sound is different on the Tenor but the depth and richness of the tones is amazing, the strings have a different feel (quality, that is) and it's holding its tuning nicely (starter uke had me tuning daily for 6 weeks before settling in...). Most people start on a soprano uke apparently, but both the sounds of this tenor and also the size of the fret might change the ease of which someone learns? (That is, sopranos are the smallest and therefore have the closest spaced frets/shortest distance. Tenors have much more space between... of course, Concert ukes fall in between the two.) Simply put: this is a great deal for the quality you're getting. If you're interested in a Tenor uke, this would be an excellent option!

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
