Alan Jossul (Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Mandolin and Banjo)

Alan Jossul teaches anything with strings and frets: guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin and banjo. He has taught music in the Comox Valley since the 1990s and earned a diploma in jazz studies from Vancouver Island University in 2001. Alan is educated in a wide variety of styles including jazz and bluegrass, and he is a founding member of local bands Big Red Truck and The Emily Cars. His lesson rate is $23 per half hour.

Bethany Parsons - Guitar, Voice, Ukulele music lessons in Courtenay

Bethany Parsons (Guitar, Voice, Ukulele)

Bethany Parsons began playing guitar in 1999, and she completed her Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy at Capilano University in 2015. Bethany specializes in folk music, and she wants to support you joyfully to find our voice, develop your skills and reach your goals. She draws on her work coaching sports (all ages) to teach physical techniques. Her method combines music theory with a lot of practical and fun ways to explore music making. She teaches guitar, voice, and ukulele. Her lesson rate is $25 per half hour.

David Stevenson - Violin, Fiddle, Flute music lessons in Courtenay

David Stevenson (Violin, Fiddle, Flute)

David Stevenson began teaching traditional Celtic fiddle in the mid-90s, drawing on the wealth of fiddle tunes he learned while living in Ireland for three years. Dave's repertoire includes Scottish, Irish, Canadian, and American fiddle tunes. For those wishing to learn classical violin, David teaches beginner violin using the Suzuki method. David also teaches classical flute, and penny whistle, bamboo flute, Sakuhachi flute, and Low D whistle. His rate is $24 per half hour.

Jacob Gregory has taught drums since 1994, after completing his BA in Music Education at Trinity Western College. He went on to teach at Walnut Grove School of Music in Langley, Guildford School of Music In Surrey, and Music Centre Canada in Calgary. Jacob has performed with Brodie Dawson, Ryan Castle, Easy Street, Joey Clarkson and Just in Time Choirs, as well as with local theatre groups. He also teaches bass. His rate is $23 per half hour.

Kristopher Benoit has been playing piano since the late '90s. He graduated from Capilano University on the Dean's Merit List with a diploma of music in 2013 and completed the grade 8 RCM piano exam in 2014. He has been teaching piano since 2015 with a focus on pre-reading using the Faber & Faber method. Kristopher has also had an extensive vocal career starting in 2004 with Cantiamo Chamber Ensemble, Capilano University Singers, and as a principal member of the Laudate singers' society under the direction of Lars Kaario. His rate is $23 per half hour.

Melissa Devost - Voice, Guitar music lessons in Courtenay

Melissa Devost (Voice, Guitar)

Melisa Devost is a musician, performer, theatre artist and teacher with over 12 years of teaching experience. She has released three records independently, toured nationally and internationally, and recorded and performed with some of Canada’s finest. She has also won awards for her song-writing. She attended the Jazz program at Vancouver Island University as a guitar major, which she left after a year to write, record and go on the road. She studied Speech Level Singing® with master teacher Spencer Welch and completed her teacher certification in Fitzmaurice Voicework® in LA, which is a full body approach to voice and performance. She studied Roy Hart work with teacher Richard Armstrong, and continues to nurture her curiosity about voice both as a teacher and as a student, believing that all good teachers are perpetual students. Her lesson rate is $25 per half hour.

Nancy Horobetz - Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Brass, music lessons in Courtenay

Nancy Horobetz (Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Brass,)

Nancy Horobetz holds a Bachelor's of Music Education from Brandon University and taught middle school and high school band in Manitoba for over 30 years. She currently plays with the Comox Valley Concert Band, Campbell River Community Band and Strathcona Symphony Orchestra. Nancy offers instruction in all beginner brass instruments, in particular French horn and trumpet. Her rate is $24 per half hour.

Oscar Robles Diaz - Guitar, Bass, Drums, Percussion music lessons in Courtenay

Oscar Robles Diaz (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Percussion)

Oscar Robles Diaz is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, music teacher, recording artist and composer. Oscar holds a Bachelor's of Music degree from Mexico's National University (UNAM)'s classical guitar program. He performs regularly as a soloist and in such projects as Zandhunga, Blues Report, Loose Gravel, Café Olé and Azucena Flamenco. Oscar teaches acoustic guitar, particularly flamenco style, and bass. Oscar also teaches several types of drumming and percussion: electronic and acoustic drum kit, cajon, djembe, timbales and many others. His extensive knowledge in Latin and African percussion styles is largely thanks to clinics and workshops with such greats as Lamine Thiam of Senegal, as well as master percussionist from Mexico Candido Hernandez, with whom Oscar has collaborated extensively on several different projects. His rate is $23 per half hour.

Rachel Fuller - Clarinet, Saxophone, music lessons in Courtenay

Rachel Fuller (Clarinet, Saxophone,)

Rachel obtained a BA in Music from Southampton University, England with First Class Honors in 2007. She also obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from Vancouver Island University in 2017. She has worked extensively as a professional musician across Europe, and continued her performing career as a clarinetist and saxophonist for P and O, and Princess Cruise Lines. Since moving to the Valley, she has taught band at both L'ecole Au Coeur De L'ile and Gaglardi Academy, grades 6-12. She has completed all ABRSM exams with Distinction, as well as a Viva Voce in Elementary Piano Pedagogy with First Class Honors from the RCM. Rachel enjoys guiding students through RCM exams (all levels) as well as exploring elements of jazz and popular music for those inclined. Her rate is $24 per half hour.

Rick Bossom has been performing, writing and creating music since 1982, and has taught at L&M since 2011. He has a great deal of experience in the music business, including over 5,000 live performances, writing radio jingles & video production soundtracks and signing a publishing deal on his first CD. Rick's teaching style focuses on ear training techniques, improvising and making songs “your own”, reading sheet music, lead sheets and the fundamentals of music theory. Advanced students can explore the place of piano & keyboards in rock & pop bands, and creation & sequencing of music through midi sequence programs and hard disk recording. Veronica Klock has been teaching piano lessons since 1992. She completed A.R.T.C. in 1994 and graduated from UBC in 1998. She has accompanied choirs at the Grotto in Portland, OR and Disneyland, CA , and she currently plays with the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra. She tailors each learning experience to best fit individual learning aptitudes, styles, and needs, while fostering healthy playing techniques that help protect against repetitive strain injury and allow musicians to draw the most exquisite tone possible from the instrument.
