History of the Steel Guitar           
with Scott Smith

For this clinic, Scott will trace the history of the instrument from its Hawaiian origins through to the development of the dobro, the early lap steels, and the 10-string pedal steel. In addition to talking about the mechanics, tuning and techniques of the instrument, Scott will talk about many of the steel guitar innovators like Sol Hoopii, Don Helms, Buddy Emmons, Cindy Cashdollar and Greg Leize, and play examples of the steel repertoire like Steel Guitar Rag, Your Cheating Heart, Heart of Gold, You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere and, of course, Sleepwalk.            

Scott Smith has helped make a lot of other people sound great over the years. From the arena-sized country of Aaron Pritchett, to the heartland rock of Barney Bentall, to Vancouver club and festival favourites like Rich Hope, Smith has been everybody’s ringer, flipping between pedal steel, guitar and dobro, while casually raising the bar with lightning technique and unfailing good taste.
