The First Instrument
With Mike Murza
A hands-on workshop exploring the earliest percussion instruments ever used and how their playing styles shaped modern rhythm. Participants will learn how these instruments were played, why they were designed the way they were, and how those ideas translate directly to contemporary percussion and drumming. A variety of percussion instruments from around the world will be featured, including replicas of ancient Medieval instruments from Mike’s own collection.
Mike Murza is a veteran performer and percussion educator who has been active in Saskatoon for over 25 years. In addition to teaching privately, he has held loud and lively workshops in schools, public libraries, and at children’s festivals. Mike holds a B.Mus in percussion performance and his educational areas of focus are organology (the history and evolution of musical instruments) and notational history.
