Ear Training: A Direct and Practical Approach

Ear training is a sure-fire way to quickly improve any aspect of your musicianship - from improvisation to reading to composition. In this clinic, Duncan will take you through his favourite ways to develop the ears; from classical exercises to modern neuroscience and more. He’ll take you through what works, what doesn’t, and how anyone can improve their own ears.

Duncan McCartney is a Calgary-based musician who has been teaching music since 2014. He performs as the bassist, keyboardist and backing vocalist of bands In/Vertigo, Solhound, and the Shannon Smith Band. He is also an in-demand session musician and fill-in player for many bands and artists across Western Canada.

Duncan began his musical journey with classical piano lessons at a young age, followed by years playing clarinet and saxophone in school band programs, which led him to gain a Music Performance Diploma from Mount Royal University and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Vancouver Island University. He then taught himself guitar, bass, music production, and every skill he’s needed as a busy pro musician since then.

STRUCTURE: Learn the “rules”, so you can decide how to break them - genre, constraints, style.

LYRICS: Write down all the cheese - then make it cool later. - specificity, syllables, space.

FEEL: Tools to help you achieve the sound and mood you’re after. - chord choices, minor/major = sad/happy, melody, perspective (1st person vs 3rd).

USE THE VOICE YOU HAVE: Be inspired by others, but write from your own vibe and POV. (…and how to figure out what that even is…)
