Tips for the Self-Taught Guitarist

This is a clinic designed to help guitarists who feel like they've hit a wall. Whether you're a completely self-taught guitarist looking to fill the gaps in your knowledge, an experienced guitarist who hasn't had lessons in ages, or you're relatively new to guitar and just want a firm grounding in the basics, this clinic will ensure that you have all the practical knowledge you need to progress to the next level.

Topics covered in this clinic will include: how to hold a pick (it's a bigger deal than you think), proper left-hand technique, strumming patterns, how to decide on fingering, barre chords, how to find notes on the guitar and more! There will also be a question-and-answer period as part of the clinic, so feel free to come with questions about the issues you're having with your playing.

Although having a grounding in some of the basics of guitar will help you get more out of this clinic (the ability to play open chords and some simple riffs), this clinic is appropriate for guitarists of all skill levels.

Jesse Martel is a guitarist, performer, songwriter and bandleader from Kitchener, Ontario. He is an honours graduate from both the Mohawk College advanced Diploma in contemporary music program and the Humber College Bachelor of Music program. Throughout his time in school, Jesse received extensive education from world-class musicians in a wide range of genres, including Jazz, Blues, Folk, Singer-Songwriter, Pop, Funk, Rock, and Gospel. As a professional performing musician, he has performed regularly as part of a variety of live musical acts. Throughout his time as a performer, he has also maintained a busy schedule as an educator, teaching one-on-one personalized lessons for Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Theory, Composition, and performance prep, as well as teaching regular clinics at the prestigious Appleby College in Oakville.
