Saxophone Performance Tips Clinic: How to Develop a Great Sound - Waterloo

Getting the best sound and response on any wind instrument requires an energized air supply. Learn from a master how to easily focus your air stream in order to maximize and control your sound. Good articulation, tone and reed response all require air support or diaphragmatic breathing.

High notes sounding thin or pinched? Low notes dull or squawking? Embouchure adjustment and awareness of the vocal cords in ‘voicing’ can greatly improve both. A few simple techniques can correct a lot of problems. Learn how to start accessing overtones and the high altissimo register of your instrument.

Improve your sound through better control of dynamics. Add expression with vibrato, growling and note bending. Bring your instrument and ask questions.

Saxophonist Willem Moolenbeek has performed across Canada as recitalist and soloist with choirs, orchestras and bands. In addition to having taught on the music faculties of the University of Waterloo and McMaster University he has been a Jupiter and Vandoren performing artist since 2007.
