The Traynor IronHorse head is the perfect amp for players who need to take the controlled sound of a low power 'lunchbox' amp out of the studio and on to a live stage. Loud enough for almost any venue, the EL34 driven 40-watt all-tube design makes the IronHorse a true tone monster that delivers maximum versatility at club and concert volume.

The unique design of the IronHorse uses a cascode input stage using a low gain 12AU7 triode tube and making it run like a high gain pentode tube. This increases input sensitivity while offering lower noise and higher frequency response than any design using a standard high gain pentode tube. This boutique design trick creates the soon to be legendary IronHorse tone.

The IronHorse allows the player to radically change the tone of the amp by choosing between fixed or cathode bias modes on the output tubes. Fixed bias mode delivers higher headroom and tighter sound, while the cathode bias mode creates more compressed saturation and a completely different distortion characteristic.

Simple controls make it easy to find the ideal guitar tone. Basic controls include Gain, Bass, Treble and Master pots and a three stage mode switch mounted on the front panel. The Mode switch selects clean pure or solo tones. The pure setting bypasses the tone stack altogether, making the signal path from your fingers to the speaker as short as possible. Solo Mode is a higher gain footswitchable variation of the Pure Tone, again bypassing the tone stack and adding unmatched edge and clarity to your lead sound.

Over the course of 31 years I’ve owned tube amps, solid state amps, hybrid amps. Combos and head/cab set ups of all flavours. Pedals!?! Oh I’ve had pedals too! This amp with the Traynor Greenback fitted 2x12 convertible cab is hands down, my favourite. Fabulous headroom up to many decibels. Versatile on tone. If you want high gain or to chunk out, string a suitable pedal up front. The pure setting is the most accurate representation of the individual playing and the guitar in hand, that I’ve experienced. It’s a keeper and gets the lions share of duties.

I normally use higher gain amps like my EVH 5150 or Peavey 5150. But I bought this amp to be clean front end for my pedal board. It works beautifully with pedals up front, but I was floored at how great it sounds with multi effects in the FX return. Boom mind blown! Paired I with the YBX212 cab loaded with Celestion V30, and it is a massive wall of sound in a nice light portable package. Headroom for days! These are discontinued, so if you are on the fence get one now while they are some left in stock. Should also mention for the techie types like myself, easy bias point and trim pot access with instructions stamped right on the amp chassis. Great job Traynor, I see more Traynor products in my future.

Needed a clean platform for my pedalboard. Dirt and wah in front. Delay and line booster in the effects loop I use the "pure" setting (bypass the eq) gain on 5. The clean el34 tone is a perfect match for a few good pedals. 15/40 watt. Gets very loud, unlike other lunchbox style amps.

Stop it. Stop. Stop wasting your time with those mass-manufactured lunchbox amps that have no low end. No low-mids. No power. You can use this baby at room levels with hardly any noise floor... and it's loud enough to gig with. What more do you really need? Buy some quality pedals, maybe a nice pre-amp, and your search is over. I know mine is. This amp, in my opinion, outperforms the Mesa Boogie Mini-Rectifier as well as the Egnater Tweaker head. It's warmer, stronger, and because it's a Traynor, it will live on the road. Joy! Sounds fantastic with my most basic guitar: a Basswood Squier strat with Fender Hot Noiseless pickups. Can't wait to try it with a high-end strat. This is a Traynor classic. And that means something. Makes me proud to be Canadian.

I was in need of a tube amp between 40-50 watts and not crazy packed with extras. Something that had great clean headroom to allow me freedom to experiment with pedals. I was very pleased with this amp. I can select between 15 or 40 watts, it has excellent clean headroom for my pedals, but it also sounds amazing on its own. I use it with the traynor ybx212 slant cab, and the two up perfect together. Thinking of pairing it with another of the same set up for a truly stereo experience.

Tried this amp and fell in love with the sound. Exactly the classic rock sound I was looking for.Huge fat crunch with my 427 distortion pedal pushing the input with the master all the way up playing thru twin 1960 cabs. Loud enough for almost anything. Can't get enough of the sound of this amp. Friends and bandmates all made positive comments on the sound.Sturdy carry case included. Seems to be built like a tank. It has replaced my Marshall 9200 poweramp.Would have liked a footswitch to be included.

Tried this little amp and was amazed by the huge sound. The cleans are sparkly and the crunch is just what I needed for my classic rock band. I push the front end with a BBE 427 pedal to get a really thick and rich tone through a 4x12 Marshall cab. Everyone is stunned by the sound this little lunchbox amp puts out. I can even drown out our drummer, and he plays really loud. Love this amp.

I got this for my guitar rig and it pushes my 1x12 cab really nicely, from a dirty growl to a clean shine. I thought I'd try putting it as my bass head pushing a 4x10 and it really sounds great. I'm so glad I spent the extra couple of hundred vs. some other cheaper lunchbox tube amps, this one will be sticking around for a long time. I can't believe the level of quality for the price. A+

Title says it all, after trying out everything under the sun. From Big names to Boutique amp makers with the prices to match, I was preparing to spend as much as it took to get what I wanted.. I settled on this little Home-made (Canadian) amp. I am extremely happy with my choice. Meeting all my requirements, of obvious great tone, portability, and good crisp sounding clean headroom. This amp is very simple to use, yet very versatile. If you like your pedals like I do, score another point for the IronHorse.. it chomps them down and humbly asks for more, in true Canadian fashion. After its first night to a jam, ears were opened as it was definitely noticed for its great sound.. and eyes were opened when I told them what I paid! Only knock on it, footswitch for the channels was sold separately.

Got this amp through a trade in for my older amps and this thing rocks through my Cannabis rex loaded 2x12 fender tonemaster cab and Marshall 1960a 4x12 celestion loaded cab... has that natural power tube break up and pairs well with my fat boost and fuzz pedals.. all around amazing amp and great value.. it is a tad on the bright side but in a band setting it is perfect .. especially when your other guitarist is using a fender amp

I love the tone and simplicity of this powerful head, especially through Traynor's 2x12 cabinet. Thick, buttery, creamy tones - from cleans to over-drives. This is not a high gain amp, perfect for classic rock and the likes. You can attain low volumes for bedroom/late night sessions in both the 15/40 watt settings. Cranked up (in USA mode) with the master maxed out and the gain at 3 o'clock this amp sounds amazing!!! Another thing...I don't seem to miss the reverb; this amp doesn't need it. My set-up is simple: I use a Maxon CP9 compressor pedal into a Mesa Flux-Drive pedal to IronHorse.

I traded in my Traynor YCV80Q CUSTOM VALVE 80W 4X10 for these new heads with the matching 2x12 cabinets. Unbelievable tone. It was like being used to listening to an 8 track then getting a cd player.

Awesome lunchbox-style amp from Traynor. Consistent with their vintage tone and quality. It's very tight. It's super-clean, yet you can add enough gain to give it a nice amount of grit.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
