Chris Davis - Lessons Coordinator

In addition to receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from Memorial University in classical double bass, Chris has studied jazz at Humber College in Toronto and at the Bass Collective in New York City, under the tutelage of Mike Downes, Paco Luviano, Lincoln Goines, and Dr. Nathan Cook. His travels as a musician have seen him perform in Orlando, London, Hiroshima, and Beaumont-Hamel - but St. John’s is still home. He has extensive studio experience and has performed with groups such as the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Florian Hoefner Trio, Havana to Canada, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. After working in L&M St. John’s’ band department for several years, he is honored to take on the role of Lessons Coordinator.

We specialize in all styles of music, from rock and pop to classical and even traditional fiddle and accordion, unique to our Newfoundland heritage! Our outstanding teachers provide a comfortable environment for guitar lessons, piano lessons, whatever your interest may be! Open Monday to Friday, 10am to 9pm and Saturdays 9am to 5pm, we offer flexible scheduling in our 14 well-equipped studios. There are no registration fees for lessons and no commitment is required! We also provide recitals twice yearly free of charge for all students, friends and family! Clayton Saunders is a composer, performer, and private music teacher from Grand Falls-Windsor who studied jazz guitar at McMaster University. Since moving back to Newfoundland, Clayton has played music all across the island with multiple groups including international artists such as Chris Kirby, Matthew Hornell, Brad Jefford and The Once. He has also been in multiple tribute concerts, such as The David Bowie Tribute Show (guitar), The 20th Anniversary Tribute of Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (guitar), a John Prine Tribute (drums), and a Tragically Hip Tribute (drums). Clayton currently teaches guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, piano, drums (kit) and auxiliary percussion and has been teaching since 2003. Clayton’s rate is $24 per half hour lesson.

Cleary is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Music program at Memorial University. Cleary has enjoyed performing music from the spry age of eight, when he began playing cello in a strings program offered by his elementary school. He continued playing cello in the public school system until grade eleven, when he joined the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Peter Gardner. During this time, he studied privately with Theo Weber. During his studies at Memorial, Cleary has had the pleasure of studying composition with Dr. Andrew Staniland, Dr. Clark Ross, and cello with Dr. Vernon Regehr. Cleary is the recipient of the NSYO Founders Leadership Award. Cleary currently lives, studies, performs, and works in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Cleary's rate is $24 per half hour lesson.

Damien has been teaching music since 1997.He is an author, composer, arranger, musician and music publisher. He studied at the Conservatoire de Saintes, France, and has a degree from The Music Academy International de Nancy (Partner with Berkley Music College). Damien was an Ibanez guitar instructor in France for 13 years and an entry examiner for the Music Academy International de Nancy. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, James is a freelance flutist and teacher in St. John’s, Newfoundland. James holds an undergraduate degree in flute performance from Brandon University as well as a master’s degree in pedagogy from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is currently completing his second master’s degree from MUN in flute performance. His pedagogical studies have lead him to explore effective and varied educational techniques and language, as well as what makes efficient and successful practicing. James currently works with the CBS Concert Band as well as assistant-teaching the beginner and step-up bands. He also teaches the flute classes through the local Sistema-inspired program, Project Grace. He has performed with numerous ensembles including Opera on the Avalon, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble. James’ rate is $25 per half hour lesson.

Kyleigh is in the final months of her B.Mus with a minor in Psychology at Memorial University, where she studied classical guitar under Sylvia Proulx. Kyleigh began playing guitar with the instruction of Brian McHugh at the age of 9, and began writing music and performing in 2011. Some of her performances include the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre Concert Series, IGA Music Concert Series, West Street Lunchtime Series, Strawberry Festival, Sounds of Summer and Winter Wonders. She has also opened for musicians such as The Fortunate Ones, Brian Byrne and Stompbox NL. Laura Johnston has worked as educator for 15 years. She is a lyric soprano and has directed numerous school choirs and musicals. Laura believes music and singing are for everyone and has taught children and adults from varying musical backgrounds and experiences.

She is a graduate of Mount Saint Vincent University (M. Ed.) and Acadia University (B. Ed., B. Mus.) and is currently a student at MUN (M. Mus.) in Voice Performance/Pedagogy. Laura is also an Orff Specialist and completed her Orff Level III training in 2017 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

A promoter of music education programs for both adults and youth, Laura is the former Education Director with Opera Nova Scotia. With the Nova Scotia chapter of Carl Orff Canada, she has been a clinician, conductor, and event organizer. Active as a performer, recent roles include Casilda in Opera Nova Scotia's production of The Gondoliers and the role of Duchess in Memorial University's production of William Todd's opera Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Savanna Muscat was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario. She completed her B. Mus in Euphonium and Classical Voice at the University of Windsor and is currently pursuing her M. Mus at Memorial University in Newfoundland. During her music journey, she started teaching privately and in the school system in piano, voice, and brass. Aside from her teaching career, she is an avid performer, both in the instrumental and choral world. Performance highlights include singing in the Symphony Chorus alongside the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to perform in many masterworks and operas; touring with Mid-America Productions to perform at Carnegie Hall; playing lead trumpet in local Broadway productions; and playing alongside Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Shae-Lynn is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Music program at Memorial University where she studied under Dr. Nancy Dahn, and Jennifer Johnson. She is a violinist, pianist, and flautist from Clarenville, Newfoundland who began her music studies at the age of five. The piano was her first instrument and lessons on the violin and flute followed shortly after. Since then she has continued to learn new instruments and use them to write and record songs. Shae-Lynn has been performing in the Kiwanis Music Festival of Clarenville since the age of six years old. She has been a member of the MUN Chamber Orchestra, as well as small chamber ensembles since she began her studies in 2016. Born in Baie Verte, NL, Steve is a classical guitarist and composer with over 20 years teaching experience. He studied at Acadia University under Ken Davidson and Eugene Cormier, recieving his Bachelor of Music in Performance in 2005. He has performed in a variety of genres, including rock bands, traditional music groups, jazz ensembles, and punk bands. He worked as Music Director for the 24 Hour Play, a charity production that sees performers prepare and perform a full length musical in twenty four hours. His compositions have been used in theatre, video games and televison, with a performance of his original fingerstyle guitar music being featured on MTV Live. His solo compositions for classical guitar have been featured on recordings supported by grants from MusicNL. He currently works as the Artistic Director for the Atlantic Guitar Society, a non-profit organization that aims to bring meaningful classical guitar experiences to Newfoundland, and to provide scholarships to students pursuring post-secondary studies in classical guitar. He has recieved grants from MusicNL as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.

Steve teaches acoustic, electric and classical guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, and banjo. He also offers lessons in theory, composition, and songwriting. His students have won Gold Medals in Royal Conservatory exams, recieved awards and scholarships through Kiwanis festivals and Rose Bowl performances, and have gone on to excel in post-secondary education. Steve also hosts a variety of group lessons. His Improv Group sees students learning to solo in a variety of styles, with a focus on jazz standards. His ukulele group features "ukulele orchestra" style arrangments, and singalongs where anyone of any level can come and join in the fun! He is the conductor and arranger for the Classical Guitar Quintet, an ensemble featuring students of all skill levels. Steve also runs the Long and Macquade Classical Guitar Camp, a summer event that brings teachers from across Canada to St. John's for a series of concerts and masterclasses. Tony Tucker ‎is a drummer and percussionist from St. John's who started playing drum kit at the young age of 10, alongside his parents who played piano and organ in church. Throughout his teens, he recorded and toured with bands ranging in style from rock to traditional/folk, including ECMA nominees The Danette Eddy Band and Potbelly. In the 1990’s, Tony began studying world percussion, with his primary focus being the traditional rules of Flamenco, West African, Middle-Eastern, and Latin percussion.

Tony's passion for West African music led him to study under master djembe players Famoudou Konate, Mohamed Kalifa Kamara, Mamady Keita, and M'Bemba Bangoura. He performed with five-piece drum ensemble Fola, specializing in Guinean percussion. Fola has played at the annual Victoria Day Festival in Bermuda, as well as Halifax’s Atlantic Jazz Festival, Multicultural Festival, and Drum Festival.

In 1997, Tony joined the group El Viento Flamenco, wherein he has perfected the complex hand clapping so integral to the art of flamenco and has added Cajon, Bongos, Darbuka and Udo to the group’s sound. El Viento has released three CD's, one of which won a 2007 ECMA for Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year. The group has performed with numerous Canadian Symphonies, the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, the Atlantic Festival of Lights, PEI’s Folk and Jazz Festival, The Atlantic Film Festival, and the prestigious Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Tony's rate is $25 per half hour lesson.
