1966 was the first full year of use for a larger headstock on the Stratocaster—a significant enlargement that dramatically changed the guitar's appearance and, according to many, improved its resonance. Under CBS's new ownership since the previous year, Fender's production remained top-notch, and the company continued to produce highly sought-after, high-quality instruments. The Custom Shop's '66 Closet Classic Deluxe Stratocaster meticulously recreates the much-desired large-headstock Strat, with customizations perfect for guitarists and aficionados. The two-piece body made of select alder features a polished, slightly aged Closet Classic Deluxe lacquer finish, while the quarter-sawn maple neck has an oval '66 "C" profile, a 9.5-inch rounded-laminate rosewood fingerboard, and 21 medium-wide frets for comfortable classical playing.

The Custom Shop's hand-wound, gray-bottomed '65 Strat pickups (with the middle pickup featuring reverse polarity and winding) and Vintage Modified #2 wiring with a Tone-Saver purge circuit and five-way switch create a massive, balanced sound at any volume; all mounted on a three-ply, parchment-style pickguard. Other features include a retro Custom Shop synchronized tremolo system, retro-style tuning machines, a nylon wing nut and string guide with spacer. Also included is a custom hardshell case, strap, and certificate of authenticity.
