history of Airline Guitars:
Airline guitars began as a budget mail-order brand sold by Montgomery Ward in the late 1950s. Originally manufactured in Chicago by Valco, they are famous for their quirky designs and "Res-O-Glass" (fiberglass) bodies. Canadian company Eastwood Guitars resurrected the Airline brand name, producing reissued models. These versions traded the original fiberglass bodies for more traditional wood (like mahogany) and upgraded modern hardware to improve playability and reliability. In 2024, the brand underwent a shift and became an independent company operating out of Chicago, focusing on retro-inspired electric instruments.
interresting fact: In the early 2000s, Jack White of The White Stripes brought mainstream attention to the Airline brand by playing a vintage 1964 Res-O-Glass model (the J.B. Hutto or "Jetsons" model).
