The legendary Joe Strummer played guitar with razor-sharp intensity, raw energy, and passion in every powerful strum. He embodied punk culture and played a crucial role in its development. His direct, honest, and motivating style would garner legions of die-hard fans worldwide.
Best known for his work with The Clash, Strummer and his bandmates played a major role in the creation of punk rock and have inspired countless other bands to this day. Strummer commanded the stage like a fiercely determined punk rock leader, blasting through songs with his guitar like a machine gun. His weapon of choice during the London Calling and Combat Rock eras was his seminal Fender Esquire®. Perfectly suited to his stripped-down, straightforward playing, the Esquire was the perfect tool for Strummer, who would go on show after show, exercising his angst and often forcing his drummer to play strings with sticks during songs. The guitar was a favorite of Strummer's and featured on many of their most famous shows, especially in the band's later years.
We're thrilled to be able to recreate this musical masterpiece in the Fender Custom Shop for a limited edition. Master luthier Jason Smith has restored the Esquire to its Clash-era look with meticulous precision, complete with a black racing stripe, custom "Bourbon Street" decal, and Relic finish. Not just for collectors, this guitar is built to take a beating and produce a blistering sound for anyone who dares to wield it on stage.
It features a two-piece, offset-seam alder body, a single-ply eggshell pickguard, a flat-sawn maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, a 9.5" radius, medium jumbo frets, a 1959 "C" profile, and Schaller mini-tuners. A string-through-body, top-loading Tele® bridge is equipped with a hand-wound Josefina 55/56 bridge pickup, connected to a 3-way switch and 1959 Esquire wiring. Also included is a Certificate of Authenticity, a strap, and a custom pink anvil case with "Strummer" stencil and leopard-print lining.
