Description
The T3 features sapele back and sides and a maple top. Its sapele neck has a 630mm scale length (slightly longer than a Les Paul) and a 21-fret ebony fingerboard with dot inlays. It features a single cutaway with a Venetian cutaway and white binding on the body and fingerboard. The nut and bridge are Tusq, while the tailpiece, bridge, tophat adjustment knobs, and other hardware are chrome. The guitar's subtle Art Deco aesthetic is partly reflected in its very modern sound holes.
At the heart of the T3's sound are its Taylor HD humbuckers with coil splitting. This is where things get intriguing. At first glance, they're excellent: capable of producing powerful tones, from clean to crunch, all controlled by a three-way selector switch. But for tone lovers, turn up the volume knob and you suddenly have access to a full range of single tones (neck, neck/bridge, and bridge). In this mode, the tone controls also work a little differently: instead of just passively attenuating, they emphasize the mids with an extra boost. Next comes the kicker: turn up the tone knob and you have a new range of frequencies to explore. Taylor has integrated another capacitor into the circuit, triggered by the push/pull potentiometer. Some tones generated by this circuit can sound like a Strat, while others evoke an acoustic guitar. Even more surprising, the power and responsiveness of the T3's tone and volume knobs are impressive. You'd think it was an active, battery-powered circuit, but incredibly, it's entirely passive. It's simply very well designed, offering a spectacular range of tonal colors.
