Born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1982, José Brites began playing guitar at the age of twelve. Initially self-taught, he went on to study classical guitar at the music conservatory. His journey into jazz began with private lessons, and developed as his concerts progressed. In 2021, José obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a specialization in jazz studies from Concordia University (Montreal), where he was mentored by Greg Amirault, Chemtov and Sage Reynolds (all from McGill University, Montreal).
With 10 years of teaching experience and over 15 years on stage, José specializes in a variety of plucked string instruments, including guitars (classical, electric and Portuguese), bass and cavaquinho. With a wealth of experience in studio recording, production and arranging, José performs regularly on the Montreal scene alongside musicians such as Suzi Silva and Victoria Malenfant. He has also collaborated on numerous musical projects, including Ultrafox, Space Cowbell, Fad'AZZ, and many others.
Passionate about passing on his knowledge, José is a seasoned musician with many years' experience in private teaching.
Over the years, he has had the pleasure of accompanying students of all ages and levels, from enthusiastic beginners to more advanced musicians. His teaching method, focused on adapting to each student's individual needs, has enabled him to create a stimulating and personalized learning environment. Thanks to his hands-on expertise and deep commitment to his students, José has developed an educational approach that brings out the best in everyone, while cultivating a lasting passion for music.
