Understanding How Piano Sheet Music is Formatted Image

Picking out a piece of sheet music to play on the piano is such an enjoyable experience. When it comes to making a choice that's "just right," there is no shortage of options.

In this article, we highlight and explain the different ways piano sheet music is formatted, along with book recommendations for beginners and experienced pianists. With this knowledge in hand, your next sheet music choice should be just as easy as it is informed!

Super Easy Piano

The "Super Easy Piano" format is written in treble clef only, with large-print notation that includes each note name. Key signatures with sharps or flats are omitted, and accidentals are placed beside each note as necessary.  There are also no page turns required, allowing you to stay fully engaged with the music.

Chord names are included above the melody with voicings chosen to minimize hand movement. What's really great is that the fingering for each chord is included as a keyboard diagram at the beginning of each song.

"Super Easy Piano" is a great choice for players who are just starting out with reading notation or for those who wish to accompany themselves with chords.

Super Easy Piano Book Recommendations

Each book includes numerous genres and dozens of easy piano songs to play. A few popular examples include:

5 Finger Piano

The next level up is "5 Finger Piano", which again includes arrangements for beginning players. In this case, both treble and bass clefs are used with a single-line melody moving between them.

A keyboard diagram showing correct finger placement is also included at the beginning of each song. Both hands remain mostly in a fixed position to encourage keyboard familiarity. A really cool feature is the inclusion of an accompaniment part that adds excitement and extra motivation to each piece. It's perfect for a teacher or parent!

"5 Finger Piano" is a great option for students taking their first steps in reading the treble and bass clefs in simple keys.  It is designed to develop fluency while also building technique and coordination between both hands.

Big Note Piano

Rounding out the beginner piano level is "Big Note Piano". As its name implies, songs at this level have larger print, making them easier to read. Keys are kept relatively simple - up to one sharp or flat - with rhythmic values including whole, half, quarter, eighth and dotted notes.

Both hands are used together, with greater emphasis on melodic motion in the treble clef.  I find these arrangements particularly suitable for players at an RCM 1 or 2 level.  They're also great for adults returning to the piano after some time away.

Easy Piano

Moving into the late-beginner/early-intermediate level, we have "Easy Piano".  Here we have tons of choices across categories such as pop, film, jazz, and classical. "Easy Piano" arrangements are again kept in simple keys and rhythms, with the inclusion of 16th notes and triplets. Printing is relatively large, and the bass clef is used more frequently.

The two major publishers, Alfred Publishing and Hal Leonard, differ slightly in their arrangements. I would classify Alfred as being about a half-grade higher, as there is more chordal activity in the bass clef, along with phrase markings like dynamics and pedal indications.

It's also worth noting that for both publishers, classical arrangements are more challenging than pop arrangements. Despite the name “easy”, these types of books are meant for pianists past the beginner stage, suitable for players at an RCM 3 or 4 level.

Piano/Vocal/Guitar

"Piano/Vocal/Guitar" or "PVG" for short is suitable for intermediate players, generally at RCM levels 5 or 6. As its name implies, each arrangement includes an additional treble clef for the vocal melody, guitar chord frames that follow the harmonic changes, and piano accompaniment.

Both the keys and rhythms are kept unchanged, meaning you get a true sense of the song as you play. This arrangement style is very versatile, allowing multiple players to use the score simultaneously.

You can have a guitarist strumming chords, a vocalist singing, and a pianist accompanying. Alternatively, solo pianists can play the piano accompaniment, as it typically includes the melody (occasionally, a true accompaniment part is released in a separate edition of vocal selections).

Piano Solo

"Piano Solo" is a format suitable for late-intermediate and advanced players. These music pieces tend to be more sophisticated and pianistic, with popular arrangers lending their style to well-known songs. Keys can differ from the original, and there may also be extended introductions and embellished passages.

Lyrics are typically omitted, with the vocal melody included in the piano part. This format is ideal for seasoned players looking to let the piano's voice and their own singing voice really shine.

Lead Sheet

Finally, we have the "Lead Sheet" format, also known as Fake Books, presented as a melodic line with chords shown above it, leaving room for you to create your own arrangement. Melodies, rhythms and harmonies can be simplified or sophisticated depending on the artist.

This style is a favourite among jazz artists who cover standards; its openness makes this format accessible to other musicians as well.
