I recently bought one of these ( my 3rd guitar) from KIJIJI. The person that owned it never really played it ,it was a gift. The guitar is somewhat well built ,very few and minor construction flaws the biggest of all being the fact that the action is set way too high and I must say I find this disappointing. The sound projection and sustain are those of much more expensive guitars.I changed the strings to Savarez HT-540 high tension -as always- and the guitar can be heard a mile away !Built for a lifetime of use with proper storage and care. Hard to find anything as good for the money.Tried Godin ,Yamaha etc but this one really sings.Best bet for serious beginners and even intermediate players.

Cannot believe the quality of this product for the money. Wood bindings, tight grain across the top with the cedar. The neck is true and uses a Spanish heel to the body. Tried many Yamaha classical, and the La Patrie, and none regardless of model under a grand came close to what this inexpensive Almansa would produce for quality of sound and playability. Just the best starter classical out there for the money. I have ordered a 457 Almansa based on my experience with the 401. Also with cedar. If you cannot make up you mind between spruce or cedar - looking inside yourself and determine what kind of person you are. If you like warm hugs that linger, romance, and a bit of a wet kiss, then you are made for cedar. If you prefer dry to the touch, a warm handshake but no lingering, and Bach - get spruce. Just my opinion.

In the past, I have owned/played guitars and basses made by Gibson, Fender, Yamaha, Ibanez, Warwick, Ovation and others. I was looking to purchase an inexpensive classical guitar so I could explore and learn different styles of guitar playing. I had read on line that these Spanish-built guitars sounded much better than their counterparts from the Far East. And after having made several trips to Long & Mcquade to try out every classical guitar of this calibre, I have to agree. This is an exceptional instrument for the price. On my last trip to the store, they had both versions of the A-401 (the Spruce and the Mahogany) on display. I was finally able to compare them side-by-side. This Mahogany version had the sound that I was after, and I bought it right away. Tip to potential buyers: If possible, go to the Long & Mcquade store closest to you and try these instruments out for yourself. If you are a complete novice, ask one of the sales guys to play a tune so that you can stand in front of him and hear the guitar being played. They will be happy to help. Buy the guitar that sounds, plays, feels and looks the best to you.
