The 2.1 speaker system on my computer died. Decent sound for what it was. Looked for a good while for something to replace them sifted through the current garbage in the computer speaker market - either to lousy to pay for, or too expensive to justify. Looked at a few other monitors as well. Found these little babies and couldn't be happier.

This is a great sound at this price. I earlier bought Yamaha HS8 underestimating size but this opened my eyes. Best for bedroom producers or DJs and great value at this price.

I used Yamaha HS8 great sound but too big for my room and neighbours kept banging walls. Got this last week and never that that good sounds can also come from such small size Love it and great for EDM music bedroom producers. Low end is perfect for this size and clean sound. Must buy from my side till the time you get there ;p

I bought my first pair to act as a secondary monitors, basically to A and B between my high-end monitors. I love them so much I purchased three more pairs for my home theatre's 5.1 setup. I absolutely love them. For my studio I do not use a sub. For my 5.1 setup, I bought a not-too-expensive subwoofer, pairs very nicely, but sub placement had to be tweaked because of the high crossover point on the PM3s In the studio, they are quite articulate, imaging is decent, there's very little bottom but somehow they get away with it. For jazz recordings, wow. For rock and pop, they are very neutral, electronic music with sub bass will suffer, but only in the low end. Overall they lean to the neutral side, not really forgiving, but not fatiguing at all. USE: - in studio: mineral fibre treated walls, ceiling cloud and bass traps - 5.1 setup: living room, drywall walls The only con I can think of is they're not too loud and if you turn up the volume past the 5'oclock position you will hear a slight hiss (from the mix position, however in my 5.1 I can turn them up to 7 or 8 oclock, not noticeable hiss from 7 feet away)

The sales staff weren't kidding when he said I was going to get great sound from this 3' Speaker. For my home studio use, I was not disappointed. Bass was punchy, could easily handle my 808 bass samples. Clear sound, all I need to produce music. Great buy!

These are not the monitors I wanted. They are the ones I could afford. But I am really surprised at just how good they are! These are not your grand daddys three inch speakers. Will I replace them someday? Sure. But I'm in no hurry. And when I do, they'll be moving from my studio to my computer. Sound well beyond it's price point. Also, great service from the Kamloops store. Thanks

Speaker technology has come a long way I the 10 years since I owned a recording studio. So has recording technology... I can now work from home on a tiny computer desk with a laptop... These Fostex monitors are a perfect in between step from the full size monitors of a dedicated studio space and having to work in headphones at home to keep the peace with your neighbours. Also small enough you can pack them up easily to apply them elsewhere so I intend to get to know them well. Clearly they don't give a full bass range at this size but I use them more for editing and arrangement... Can do the car stereo or big system test later when close to finished.

The depth, presence and imaging of the monitors is phenomenal for their price and size. The low end is existent down to some very low frequencies, but unfortunately the 3" drivers are 3" drivers so the low end is rather mute unless you have good ears. It took me a while to get used to the lack of bass coming from a 2.1 setup to this, but after a few hours of listening, I can hear the lows well enough - and they are quite precise. For uses as a high end set of compact PC speakers to desktop "studio" monitor use, you can't really go wrong with these for the price point. Like the other commenter posted, if you looking for ~$100 powered speakers, pony up a few more bucks and get these.

bench tested a couple different pairs of speakers in the $100 range (m-Audio av-30, Beringer)! as well as these Fostec’s on the higher end of the entry level speakers ($140). The first two speakers i tested were no good out the box, but after some break in they sounded decent'ish! Then i plugged in these Fostec’s and right out of the box they sounded like the first two pairs after they had been broken in for a few hours!!! So after now only 10 hours of break the Fostec’s are sounding even better! Clear sound, good flat high, mid and low end, making it a true sound for mixing and a great sound for listening. Don’t get me wrong I would love some top end or even mid level speakers (like the Yamaha’s $400 for a pair) but I simply don't have that budget. I have these hooked up to a turntable w/built in preamp and I just use them for listening to music and they really do deliver! the sound quality is simply amazing! They can be put to full volume and there is no distortion whatsoever. Now granted they are not house shacking speakers but for me full volume is plenty loud enough for my needs! The low end response is good for such a small driver and yes I would love a sub to get some more low but for now these really are great (if you want heavy bass, get a sub! don’t ever think a two way is going to deliver the bass you’re looking for! You need a 2.1! they may have nice lows but they won't compete with a sub). For home, PC or mixing use I can say without a doubt for the price point you will not find anything better! Trust me on that i listened to many in store and i also bench tested 3 pairs (returned the two i didn't like) in that price range and these were the best by far!!! Quality built! they look clean no matter where you put them in the house (unlike others that only look good next to a PC). Very happy...they really are the best sounding of the low end range, and I can say they do compete with allot of low/mid level also, with regards to sound quailty! If you looking for banging loud get the fostec PM. 5's (maybe 4’s also)! So final thought if you have $100 to spend on a pair of speakers, don’t cheap out and buy the $80/$100 ones, find the extra $50 from somewhere and buy these it will be worth it! If you want club level loud and lots of bass you will need to spend allot more money period (at least $500)!

I purchased these in the need of a studio monitor, where listening to the HD600 everyday for a few hours have made my head hurting and ears ringing quite often. The Japanese engineered Fostex company has again lived up to their name, with their small and personal form factor, but not losing neutrality and sound quality (soundstage, lows-mid-highs, accuracy and details, etc) at the same time, in spite of a a 3inch driver. The small size means more room for acoustics or other equipment setups. Though the built quality and materials are not top notch, they are backed by a 1 year warranty, and the overall construction is above average nonetheless. I recommend these to any amateur or even professional audio enthusiasts/composers/producers who are looking for a very intimate yet revealing set of active speakers.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
