Before buying this device, the time required to get a tune going is very short, but what I find is the biggest complaint are the pads themselves. It's a lot like playing an instrument by pounding your finger tips against the desk. It doesn't seem too bad at the start, but an hour or two, and it gets kind of painful. The other issue is that the pressure sensitivity of the pads change over time depending how often you use a given pad. As a result, pressing two pads with the same force results in different pressure sensitivity readings, which requires futzing around with the pressure values inside Live. However, pads aside, this device optimizes your music creation workflow, and I am completely happy with the end results. I'd say there is a 60-80% time savings overall in the production of loops. The tweaking you have to in the arrangement view is unchanged. This results in a 30-40% overall savings depending on how much perfection you're after. I have no experience with it playing it in a "live" setting, just production.

Ditched my APC40 for this, and within 2 hours I put together a complete track including a beat, pads and melodic leads. If you can find one, buy one. Youtube is full of tutorials that will get you up and running, and in the 9.1 Beta version of Live, they've enabled Melodic Step Sequencing.
