"My great-great-great grandfather, Charles Shumway, crossed the icy Mississippi River with his young family in early February 1846 and joined thousands of Mormon pioneers on a 1300-mile trek to their new home in the Salt Lake Valley. One of Charles' fellow travelers, William Clayton, wrote the lyrics of Come, Come, Ye Saints that year, and it quickly became a motivational anthem to the thousands of pioneers who crossed the plains, and millions since who see the words and music as a source of optimism and faith on the sometimes-arduous journey of life.
