I played it right out of the box, (after a quick tuning) and checked it out from top to bottom. Tuner works good. Pick up works well. This is my out of the box impression. Top quality for a good price.

I have played apx guitars the last 7 or 8 years on several stages both indoors and out. the sound guys always love the sound they get. I had one guy at an outdoor festival walk from mixer to the stage .He wanted to see what I was playing. He later told me he was surprised it was not something a lot further up the price ladder.I told him I left the others at home. II play electric / acoustic 50/50 , the Yamaha can be played almost like an electric . LOVE IT.

I bought this for my son for his high school graduation in June (2016), and he taught himself to play on it. It's December now, and I can play him random riffs off of YouTube, and he can replicate it almost instantly. This guitar made playing music a reality. He learned to keep the instrument in tune, which is simple with the built-in tuner. It looks and sounds fantastic, and with his cheap amp on high gain, it still gives a great electric sound. It's a great size, perfect to throw in the car for the weekend. He plays it all weekend at the trailer, and met lots of new friends. They all teach each other tricks they've learned, and jam sessions last for hours. It's pretty cool watching them get better every week, and having a blast doing it. Overall, it was a great investment, and it's really boosted my son's musical confidence. He loves playing the APX, and it sounds fantastic both acoustic or electric.

I owned the apx500ll and I thought that was such a beautiful guitar not only cosmetic but sound quality was also present....of course you get a smaller quieter sound but the flow of each string was clear and sparkling and when plugged in and set up properly you get such a harmony and sound that you would not expect..... But this is the review for the apx500lll! It can only get better....I jus bought this before Christmas and I wanted the oriental blue burst but wasn't even an option on the site. So I called in to the nearest shop(sudbury) and employee named Cody hooked it up by ordering in from the warehouse in Toronto there was only two left. I got it on the 28th and man its even more beautiful then it's older model. Better sound from upgraded pre amp system and piezo pick up under the saddle. I can't beleive how easy this guitar is to play. No need to strum hard at all you get more precise  strums, shorter with less range of motion just like an electric.... It's perfect for practice and quick solo gigs, but it also is a very capable stage and studio guitar. For the price everyone should have one In there collection. You can't go wrong, I haven't heard a bad sounding Yamaha yet. I chose the apx500ll over a $600 Takamine cause in the store the yamaha sounded more fluid and clean. Which is why there was no tough decision on what guitar in going to buy I went straight to apx and low and behold apx500lll I was done! Only had trouble deciding the color dark sun red looks gorgeous, but I love the wood grain that the oriental blue burst highlights..... Recommend to anyone! I will stick with Yamaha for all my acoustic purposes!

The APX series is intended to be comfortable for electric players buying their first acoustic, of which I was one. It lends itself to this by being thinner, having a cutaway and having a pickup with an EQ and a tuner on the control panel. I enjoy many of the features like the cutaway and the tuner. The cutaway allows access to the higher frets which I go to often being an electric guitarist, but also helps for reaching the higher frets when playing slide guitar. The tuner is very useful when I'm in a louder environment and using an external tuner or tuning by ear is extremely difficult. I do, however, have reservations about the usefulness of the pickup for anything other than tuning and the tone given by a shallower guitar. The shallow depth of the body gives the guitar a thinner sound and also less volume, a problem when in a loud environment. Also, as an electric guitarist, I find that I never plug the APX into an amp. My reasoning behind this is that if I wanted to play through an amp, I would use an electric guitar. But, because I haven't found the pickup to be very useful doesn't mean it's useless. Overall, the instrument is solid all around with regards to construction quality and features, I'm just afraid that it suffers from too many features.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
