I bought this unit for ~$65 used, and it's held up quite well so far. I'm using it as a practice amp in a university residence, and for tone it beats the Roland cube 40xl I was using for years before. It doesn't have the same amount of effects or any amp models, but I'll take one or two usable channels over a bunch of barely passable metal tones. The delay, reverb & tremolo, although basic, are well implemented and quite usable. I wasn't expecting boutique pedals for this price, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they are. I go to jams which have a presonus mixer on site and I think this'll make doing so much easier to plug right in and play. (I commute on foot/transit) My one complaint is that it's a bit muddy on the headphone output, but for live/recording situations that shouldn't be much of a problem as it's easily fixed with EQ & a properly miked cab. When recording I tend to use an ac15 anyways, although I see nothing wrong with going DI and either using the QuarterHorse's headphone output (which has a speaker sim) or using it as a head and having a cabinet sim in your DAW. The main reason I bought this was to have an amp I can take on a bus around town or back home to Calgary without all the weight or risking a broken tube (I'd be putting my ac15 in the unheated baggage compartment of a greyhound in winter, the thought of which gives me a small anxiety attack)

Here's an updated review from the one submitted last May. The amp is even better with a good equalizer in between the amp itself and the guitar. I purchased a Boss pedal equalizer which offers tremendous new sound shaping to the pedal amp. It allows adding more mids and upper high frequencies almost like a presence control would allow. In many ways, it is superior to the original EH Screaming Bird I first used when I purchased the amp.

The Traynor Quarterhorse pedal amp is a wonderful item at a "won't be beat" price., It is loud enough for small gigs and perfect for home practice. Couple with a good cabinet, the amp covers most genre except brutal metal. I run the amp through a Traynor DHX12 cabinet (Celestion 12" greenback) an amazing cabinet on its own. With my Scremingbird treble booster, the amp is transformed into a superb 4 channels little marvel. I couldn't recommend it more. The products mentioned were all bought at Kingston L&M which has truly helpful and friendly staff.

Great amp! Bought it in Belleville a while ago. Sounds very good with a good cab. With an equalizer or another type off boost/treble booster, It can generate a great sounds with both channels. By itself, it is also a very good sounding amp at an extremely affordable price. It beats most practice amps hands down unless it's a pricey all tube type. Thanks to the L&M staff in Belleville! Great service!

I bought this on the recommendation of another L&M customer (unfortunately I never got his name) who said he'd bought one for his practices with the band and it great. So, in looking at what amps I need and want, I thought for the money I couldn't really lose. On the contrary - big win. Plenty loud enough for the rehearsal space and possibly more. This isn't a high gain monster that will hit you in the gut when chugging chords, but that's not what I play - nor would you expect that from this size of amp. But, I wasn't at full volume and it easily kept me loud enough to work with a drummer who wasn't exactly quiet. And the sound is quite good as well. The only reason I downgraded my ratings is that there isn't a decent tone stack on this, only a treble control for the drive channel. Using it with my Soul Food pedal came out a bit more mid-range heavy than I expected, I'll try my various pedals. The "Tape Delay" is kind of cool, although I found the notes (with over drive) were a bit muddy. But the tremolo option works very well, and I have a fleet of delay pedals anyways. Overall very very pleased with this amp that could fit on my pedal board - if I don't load it down with everything else.

i have a darkhorse hd & cab that i love, but late at night (early morn) even the .8 wt mode is too loud. i use the quarterH as a headphone amp. it handles pedals well. i have maxon od 808 & wampler 57 tweed & mxr carbon copy & tc electronics flashback (the single one). it sounds pretty great. does it sound like a dumble ? of course ! ( just kidding ). it sounds awesome for what it is. easy to carry back up to drive a cab. and no , i don't work for L&M or anybody. some of those guys can be cold,(not all, just maybe a boss ) ?

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
