This is Les Paul number four for me and it makes me wish I'd waited a little longer and bought a Trad instead of a Studio several years back. Trads are only a few hundred dollars more than a Studio but the tone, sustain, hand-feel, and playability are noticably superior. I genuinely figured their was little difference between ALL the Les Pauls over $1500. I won't compare the Juniors I have because they differ too much but I will go out on a limb and say this is the best sounding Gibson in the $2000-$3000 range for sure. You gotta be willing to play a guitar in a shop without being shy - who cares where your chops are at. Use headphones if you want but do a tone and playability comparison between the Les Paul's in this price range and I think you will reach the same conclusion. It's expensive, yes. But it sounds just as good as a Custom or a 50's reissue that sells for $4000+. It's the best sounding guitar I own for rock and roll, blues, punk, metal. Get a Tele if you play country (I do).

If you like pointy guitars, EMG pick ups, and howling/grunting counts as "lyrics"... the two star review is correct, otherwise ignore that guy. If you can't get a Gibson to stay in tune; it's easily remedied by a *competent* guitar tech. Traditional's are made for guys like me. I *DON'T* want locking grovers, titanium nuts, searing bright pick ups, compound radius necks feel weird to me. I like that extra bit of shoulder. I want a late fifties style neck (not a baseball bat), and binding on a solid body. I don't need a 10 top, but some flame is nice, I want the old Les Paul vibe, a sore shoulder, and that old familiar growl. Classic 57's are perfect in these guitars. I'm not buying an R9, (and if I did it would be from Historic makeovers anyway, since Gibson still does a dozen things wrong). Traditional's tick the same boxes that make those guitars great, but at a much more reasonable price point. I pay less, and don't pay for the stuff I don't want, well done boys! Chambered LP's w/ BB pros are a different beast, I own and enjoy one as well.

I owned it. I tried it. The pickups are very weak. Won't stay in tune. Extremely heavy. So sad.
